A small city of 1960s houses, condos and apartments
Artesia covers about 1.6 square miles. According to the Census Bureau's 2024 five-year estimates, the median home was built in 1966, about 7 in 10 homes are single-family and about half of occupied homes are owner-occupied. About 29 percent of homes are in buildings with two or more units, so our calls come from homeowners, landlords and property managers.
The name is Spanish for an artesian aquifer, after the naturally flowing wells of the area, and the Artesia School District was created in 1875. Grape growing and then dairy farming were early industries, and the city incorporated on May 29, 1959. In 1971 residents voted against merging with Cerritos, which now surrounds most of the city.
Pioneer Boulevard is lined with Indian-owned shops and restaurants, and a Little India designation has been proposed, though it is not an official district. City Hall is on Clarkdale Avenue and Artesia Park sits nearby. On homes built around 1966 the original springs and openers are long past their cycle life, so we check the whole door and not only the part that failed.

I woke up to a loud crash when a tree in my front yard fell over and hit my garage door. Emil Garage Doors was able to give be a really good price on a new garage door. They uninstalled the old, damaged door and realigned the tracks the garage door connects to which had been damaged as well. The new door looks great and most importantly functions well. Thank you for going above and beyond in my time of need!Stuart · Google review
They were able to come within a few hours of my call. Another company could only give me a 4 hour window of arrival time the next day, but these guys was able to give me a 2 hour window the same day. One the guys called before arriving. He was friendly and competent in explaining the problem and our options. I was so grateful he had replacement springs and was able to fix our garage door in less than an hour.David · Google review
Not paying attention I closed the garage door on a pipe laying in the track. Needless to say it did some damage even though the automatic reverse opened the door back up. Emailed what happened on Sunday evening. Appointment with quote provided in just a few minutes and appointment confirmed. Once again they arrived on time. Completed repairs quickly and for less then the quote. Cleaned up like they were never there. I highly recommend them and will continue to use them for my garage door repairs.Carroll · Google review
Technician showed up on time, assessed our issue & presented replacement options. He proceeded to install new equipment during the same visit and everything was finished in less than two hours. We were impressed with the performance of our tech. It’s easy for us to recommend this company.Kathleen · Google review
The replacement of my broken spring was done quickly and professionaly. I was also provided an explanation on why the tension was set as it was. I was called in advance to be informed of the arrival time. Great job as it has been in the pastFrancine · Google review
My garage door spring broke the other evening and I was unable to open my door. I contacted them first thing the next day. They were able to give me an appointment for later in that day. The service technician called prior to arrival as promised & arrived shortly afterwards. He recommended some additional service to the door in addition to the springs which I accepted. The door was repaired in less than 2 hours & now works better than ever. Thank youBrandi · Google review

What Artesia weather does to a garage door
Artesia has no weather table of its own in our sources, so we use Long Beach Airport, the nearest named station, in the area. Its 1991-2020 normals show average highs near 76 degrees in June and 83 in August, a record high of 111 degrees and about 12 inches of rain a year, with February the wettest month. Wikipedia's page for neighboring Cerritos gives August highs near 85 degrees. Heat dries out lubricant, and winter rain settles into tracks and bottom seals.
During a June 28, 2013 heat wave, a Southern California Edison outage affected 467 customers in Artesia, according to Los Cerritos News, with the cause listed as not known at that time. A door opener with no battery backup cannot lift the door in a blackout, so know where the red manual-release cord is and test it before you need it.
Twice a year, wipe the tracks, oil the rollers and hinges, and press the test button on the battery backup. Check that the two sensors near the floor still face each other.
- Oil rollers and hinges before summer
- Test the battery backup and the manual release
- Check the bottom seal after rain

Battery backup, permits and design rules in Artesia
Battery backup. California requires a battery backup on residential garage door openers sold or installed in the state (Health and Safety Code section 19892). A new door cannot be connected to an older opener that lacks one. See opener installation.
Design rules. Planned communities and historic overlays can limit door style and color. Ask before you choose a new door: new garage doors.
Artesia permits. Artesia is its own city. Its Building and Safety services are contracted to BPR Consultants, and permits are applied for through the city's OpenGov portal. The plan-check email is building@cityofartesia.us and City Hall's number is 562-865-6262. The city page names garages only as an example of work that needs a building permit and does not mention garage door replacement, so we could not confirm whether one needs a permit. Ask Artesia Building and Safety before you order.
Multi-family property. According to the city's FAQ, new construction and exterior alterations on commercial, industrial or multi-family property need Development Review Board approval first. The FAQ does not say this covers single-family garage door work, but landlords and property managers should ask before replacing doors on an apartment building.

Artesia garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Artesia?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Artesia (ZIP 90701) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (213) 340-4232, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Artesia?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Artesia?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP code do you serve in Artesia?
Artesia uses street-delivery ZIP code 90701, and 90702 is a PO-box ZIP. ZIP 90703 is Cerritos' own ZIP, though some Artesia addresses may use it as an accepted name. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.
Does a garage door replacement need a permit in Artesia?
We could not confirm a garage-door-specific permit rule for Artesia. Ask Artesia Building and Safety at building@cityofartesia.us or 562-865-6262 before a replacement or a new opener.
Do you work with landlords and property managers in Artesia?
Yes. About half of occupied homes in Artesia are rented and about 29 percent of homes are in buildings with two or more units, so landlords and managers call us often. Tell us who approves the work and who gives access, and we book the soonest visit.
What is the most common problem with garage doors?
Broken torsion springs are the most common problem, followed by snapped cables, worn rollers, misaligned sensors and doors that jump their track. A door that has run for decades often has more than one worn part.
Does California require a battery backup on a garage door opener?
Yes. California Health and Safety Code section 19892 says residential openers sold or installed in the state need a battery backup, and a replacement garage door cannot be connected to an older residential opener that lacks one.
Do you also repair gates in Artesia?
Yes. See gate repair and electric gate repair.
