A garage door that stops partway is usually blocked by something in its path, held back by misaligned sensors, out of balance, or stopped by the opener's own limit or force settings. Check for an obstruction, clean the photo eyes and test the door by hand. If it feels heavy, drops or binds, stop and call a technician.
Why does my garage door stop in the middle?
The opener stops the door when it thinks something is wrong. That can be a real problem with the door, or a setting or sensor problem in the opener. Chamberlain support lists the common reasons: the door is out of balance, the opener thinks it has hit resistance, the force is set too low, the travel limits are wrong, a loose or damaged part in the drive makes the opener sense resistance, or the opener cannot track the door's movement.
The fastest way to sort this out is to work out whether the trouble is in the door or in the opener. The table and the checks below do that.

Symptom to likely cause
| What the door does | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Stops and reverses on the way down | Photo eyes blocked or out of line, an obstruction, or the opener's travel or force settings | Clean and realign the sensors; look for anything in the path |
| Stops partway up or down and the opener hums or strains | The door is heavy, out of balance or binding in the track | Test by hand with the opener released; stop if it is heavy |
| Opener runs but the door stops early | The travel limits, or a fault inside the opener | Check the manual's limit steps; a technician runs the opener with the door disconnected |
| Door stops and the opener light blinks | A sensor or diagnostic code | Look up the blink pattern in your manual |
| Opens a few inches then stops | The door is catching or heavy | Check for an obstruction, then call |
A reference, not a diagnosis. The sources below list the common causes.
Five checks, in this order
Clear the path
Look at the floor, the tracks and the sides of the door for anything in the way. Clopay lists toys, debris and ice as obstructions that stop a door.
Clean the photo eyes
Wipe both lenses with a soft cloth and make sure each sensor's indicator light is on and steady. Clopay says to realign them until both lights are on. Never bypass or disable a sensor.
Test the door by hand
With the door fully down, pull the red release handle and lift the door a little. Chamberlain says a door that moves smoothly and stays put points to the opener, while one that feels heavy, sticks or drops is out of balance. If it is heavy or drops, lower it carefully and stop.
Read the opener's light
Count the blinks on the opener head and look the pattern up in the manual or on the maker's support page.
Do not turn up the force to push through
Chamberlain warns that incorrect adjustment of the travel limits interferes with the safety reversal system, and that after any adjustment the reversal must be tested. If you change a setting following the manual, test the reverse and stop if it fails.
If the door is heavy, drops when released or stops with a crooked edge, do not keep pressing the button. Springs and cables are under tension and are a technician job.
When the opener is the problem
If the door moves smoothly by hand, the opener is the likely cause. A technician can run the opener with the door disconnected: if the trolley travels the full rail, the door is the cause, and if it stops early, the problem is inside the opener. That points to worn drive parts, a sensor that tracks movement or a failed control board.
If the opener is old, replacing it may cost less than repeated repairs. See opener repair and installation and repair or replace an opener.
When the door is the problem
A door that binds, feels heavy or hangs crooked needs its springs, cables, tracks and rollers checked. Common fixes are springs, cables, rollers or a reset track. Our typical price for rollers, sensors or a tune-up is $150 to $350, and the final price is confirmed after we see the door. See spring repair and our guide to a door that will not close.

When to call
Call if the door is heavy, crooked or off track, if it keeps stopping after the checks, or if you are not sure. Questions people ask
Why does my garage door stop halfway?
The door may be blocked or out of balance, the sensors may be dirty or out of line, or the opener's limit or force settings may be wrong.
Why does my garage door open a few inches and then stop?
Something may be catching the door, it may be heavy from a spring or cable problem, or the opener may be sensing resistance. Check the path, test the door by hand and call if it is heavy.
Can I adjust the garage door opener's limits myself?
The opener maker's manual shows how. Chamberlain warns that wrong limits interfere with the safety reversal, so test the reverse after any change and stop if it fails.
Is it safe to keep using a door that stops halfway?
Not if it feels heavy, drops or leans. Stop using the opener and have a technician check the springs, cables and tracks.
