Detached houses, a college town center and low, wooded ground
According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey, Norton has about 6,800 housing units and the median home was built in 1982. About 69 percent are detached single-family houses, about 12 percent are attached homes such as townhouses and duplexes, and about 12 percent are in buildings of five or more units. About 84 percent of households own their home. Openers and springs installed in the 1980s have usually seen a few replacements by now.
Wikipedia names two villages, Norton Center and Chartley, and describes the terrain as generally low and swampy, with Norton Reservoir north of the center and Lake Winnecunnet, a kettle pond, on the east side. Wheaton College is on East Main Street. The town has a Historic District Commission, but we could not confirm which streets it covers or whether it reviews garage doors, so ask the town before you change a door near the center.
Tell us your street and whether the garage is attached or detached, and we book the soonest visit. We weigh and balance each door before choosing new springs.

What customers say
Real reviews from our Google listing, copied as the customers wrote them.
Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina · Google review
"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela · Google review
Emil is delightful, knowledgeable, professional, and capable. He promised to make the process easy and he did. From our first contact Thursday mid-day through completion of the project Saturday at Noon, everything was 100% perfect, and we are extremely happy. We are amazed when we look outside and see our beautiful new door, so soon after searching on google. Emil and his company deserve 100 stars but we are limited to only 5Dawn · Google review
It went very well, with the job being completed in three days. We waited few months for the supply chain to kick in ( Covid related delays ) and finally deliver the products. It was so worth the wait. Great installers, Emil and his team are professional and friendly, too, and patient in answering questions.Rachel · Google review
We interviewed several popular companies and we found that their quality, price, and level of professionalism is unmatched!Cory · Google review

What Norton weather does to a garage door
Wikipedia's Norton weather box, from the 1991-2020 normals, shows a July mean daily high near 83 degrees, a January mean daily low near 18, about 52 inches of precipitation and about 50 inches of snow a year, with record readings of 101 degrees in July and minus 19 in January. Cold stiffens springs, cables and weatherstripping, and road salt corrodes tracks and hardware.
Wikipedia also notes that the National Weather Service forecast office for much of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and northern Connecticut is in Norton. Norton sits on low, swampy ground, so damp air hangs around the bottom seal and lower panels; check the seal each fall and replace it when it cracks or flattens.
Before winter, wipe the tracks, lubricate the rollers and hinges, and test the safety reverse. After a snowfall, clear the ice from the bottom of the door before you run the opener.
- Check the bottom seal each fall
- Lubricate rollers and hinges before winter
- Clear ice before running the opener

Opener safety, permits and design rules in Norton
Opener safety. Federal rules (the Consumer Product Safety Commission's standard for automatic residential garage door operators, 16 CFR part 1211) require openers made for homes to reverse the door when it meets an obstruction and to have a separate entrapment protection device, which on most openers is the pair of photo-eye sensors near the floor. If your opener ignores the sensors or does not reverse, stop using it and call us. See opener installation.
HOAs and style rules. If you live in a planned community or a historic district, check style and color rules before you choose a new door. See new garage doors for styles.
City permits. Norton is a town with its own Building Inspector's office at 72 East Main Street, 2nd Floor, Room 224 (508-285-0290), led by a Building Commissioner. The town's permit FAQ says a permit is required to construct, alter or repair a structure or to install regulated equipment, with ordinary repairs the only exception, and lists decks, roofing, siding and sheds as examples. It does not mention garage doors, so we could not confirm whether a replacement or an opener swap needs a permit. Ask the department before the work at nortonma.gov.
State rules. Massachusetts General Laws chapter 142A covers residential contracting (repair, alteration, renovation and improvement) on existing owner-occupied buildings of one to four units and bars contractors from working without a registration certificate. The state building code lists work that needs no building permit but does not mention garage doors. The town's Historic District Commission (508-285-0210) works to protect the character of buildings in its district; we could not confirm which streets it covers or whether garage doors are reviewed.

Norton garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Norton?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Norton (ZIP 02766) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (617) 644-5527, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Norton?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Norton?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP code do you serve in Norton?
Norton's street ZIP code is 02766. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.
Does Norton require a permit to replace a garage door?
We could not confirm it. The town's permit FAQ treats only ordinary repairs as exempt and never mentions garage doors, so call the Building Inspector at 508-285-0290 before a replacement, and tell us when you call so we can plan the visit.
Can I change my garage door if I live near the Norton historic district?
Ask first. The town has a Historic District Commission, and we could not confirm whether it reviews garage doors. Call the commission at 508-285-0210 before you order a new door.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can handle a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so we do not recommend fixing them yourself.
How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?
Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
