What Converse weather does to a garage door
Converse has no weather station of its own. The San Antonio airport, about 12 miles away, has a July mean daily high of 94.9 degrees, a January mean low of 41.0 and about 32 inches of precipitation a year, according to Wikipedia's 1991-2020 normals. Hot afternoons wear springs, cables and seals, and a hard freeze stiffens the lubricant on rollers and hinges.
The April 12, 2016 hailstorm in San Antonio, with hail up to 4.5 inches, was heaviest over the northwest and northeast sides of that city, according to Texas Public Radio. Converse is northeast of San Antonio, but we could not confirm how hard the storm hit it. In the February 2021 winter storm the airport fell to 9 degrees and the winter's 6.4 inches of snow ranked third on record, according to KSAT. When the power fails, the red manual-release cord lets you open the door by hand.
Twice a year, wipe the tracks, lubricate the rollers and hinges, and test the safety reverse. After hail, look for dented panels and cracked door windows before you run the opener.

A fast-growing suburb with doors about 20 years old
According to the Census Bureau's 2024 five-year American Community Survey, Converse has about 10,676 housing units. About 84 percent are single-family detached houses and about 74 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied. The median year built is 2003, so most original garage doors and openers are around 20 years old and springs are reaching the end of their life.
The Handbook of Texas, citing Texas Almanac figures, counts about 900 residents in 1965 and 18,198 in 2010, and the Census counted 27,466 in 2020. German farmers settled the area first, and the town is named for Major Converse, the Southern Pacific Railroad's chief engineer, who bought the townsite in 1877. Most of the city is in Judson ISD, with a southern part in East Central ISD.
Tell us your cross street and whether the door is a single, a double or a pair, and we book the soonest visit. We weigh and balance each door before choosing new springs.
- Springs and cables nearing the end of their cycle count
- Openers from the early 2000s with worn gears
- Wide doors on newer two-story homes

What customers say
Real reviews from our Google listing, copied as the customers wrote them.
Doesn't get any better than this guy! I have recently purchased a condo with a broken garage door opener. It was missing some brackets. I called them, and Emil came out promptly the next morning. On time! He was able to run back to his shop and get the bracket I needed. It took him less than an hour to complete the entire project! My garage door works great now. I said a little thank you to Emil as I opened my garage door late last night and drove in my garage. I would definitely call him again if I needed anything done with my garage door. Highly recommend, plus he's just a super nice guy, which the process so much easier. Thanks Emil!Winston · Google review

The owner is the real deal and makes good on all promises - We love doing business with him and don't hesitate to refer this business to all. He's that good!Ryan · Google review
Called the office to let them know my issues and asked if we could get someone out to look at my door. Was told between 11-12...drove home from work at 11:05 and Emil was waiting and ready to get to work. Not knowing anything about how to fix a garage door, Emil did a great job explaining why I was having issues. Quoted a reasonable price (well at least what I thought was reasonable) and less than 40 minute later he had fixed the problem. Great customer service from intake of the call to fixing my door! If you need a garage door repair...support local business and give them your business, you won't be disappointed.Guadalupe · Google review
My garage door and opener were pretty banged up and not working properly. Emil Garage Doors came out, did a thorough evaluation of door and all it's parts. Even though the previous home owner rigged up the garage door opener with the wrong springs and parts, Emil repaired the door and saved us money by using some of the old parts. That kind of honesty will get 5 stars all day long. Thank you Emil Garage Doors for your great service.Bradford · Google review
I woke up to a loud crash when a tree in my front yard fell over and hit my garage door. Emil Garage Doors was able to give be a really good price on a new garage door. They uninstalled the old, damaged door and realigned the tracks the garage door connects to which had been damaged as well. The new door looks great and most importantly functions well. Thank you for going above and beyond in my time of need!Stuart · Google review
They were able to come within a few hours of my call. Another company could only give me a 4 hour window of arrival time the next day, but these guys was able to give me a 2 hour window the same day. One the guys called before arriving. He was friendly and competent in explaining the problem and our options. I was so grateful he had replacement springs and was able to fix our garage door in less than an hour.David · Google review

What your garage door is telling you in Converse
A starting point. We confirm the cause on site.
| The door does this | Common cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| A loud bang from the garage | A torsion spring snapped | Replace both springs and balance the door |
| The door shakes or scrapes going up | Worn rollers, dry hinges or loose track bolts | Replace rollers, tighten the track and lubricate |
| The door stops partway and reverses | A blocked or misaligned sensor, or a force setting | Clean and realign the sensors and reset the force |
| Daylight shows under the door | A worn bottom seal or an uneven door | Replace the seal and level the door |
| The opener is slow or very noisy | An old chain or belt, or a worn motor | Service or replace the opener and test the safety reverse |
Do not run a door that is crooked or heavy.
Opener safety, permits and design rules in Converse
Safety reverse and sensors. A home garage door opener sold in the United States has to reverse the door on contact and have photo-eye sensors or an equivalent entrapment protection device, under the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission standard (16 CFR part 1211). A door that closes on an object, or an opener with dead sensors, needs repair before further use. See opener installation.
Associations. Check any HOA or historic district rules before you order a new door, and see new garage doors for style options.
City permits. Converse is its own city. City offices are at 406 S. Seguin, phone 210-658-5356, and the Building Clerk is at 210-658-8285. Permit applications go online through the city's SmartGov portal, and the city says that since October 1, 2024 plans are reviewed under the 2024 International Codes and the 2023 National Electrical Code. The city's Building Division page does not say which work needs a permit, so we could not confirm whether a garage door replacement or opener swap does. The page also links to a contractor registration page we could not read, so ask the Building Clerk whether registration applies. See conversetx.gov.
Texas rules. We found no Texas statewide license for garage door contractors. A Texas Department of Public Safety page says installing garage door or gate openers needs no DPS license unless the opener is connected to an alarm system or can log who comes and goes.

Converse garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Converse?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Converse (ZIP 78109) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (214) 382-3772, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Converse?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Converse?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP code do you serve in Converse?
Converse has one standard ZIP code, 78109. A small west-side area near Gibbs Sprawl Road falls in the 78244 ZIP area on the Census map but is still inside the city. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.
Do you service garage doors in newer Converse subdivisions?
Yes. With a median home age near 20 years, many Converse doors are on their original springs, cables and openers. Tell us the make of the opener and the size of the door when you call and we plan the visit.
Do you serve both school district areas of Converse?
Yes. Most of Converse is in Judson ISD and a southern part is in East Central ISD, according to Wikipedia. We serve homes on both sides of that line.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can handle a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so we do not recommend fixing them yourself.
How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?
Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
