From 1970s ranch homes to newer subdivisions

According to the Census Bureau's 2024 five-year American Community Survey, Huntsville has about 18,200 housing units and a median year built of 1986. The 1970s are the biggest decade with about 4,600 homes, and about 2,900 homes went up between 2010 and 2019. About 43 percent of units are single-family detached houses, and about 59 percent of occupied homes are rented.

Elkins Lake is a planned community inside the city, with an elected board and an elected architectural committee that enforces deed restrictions, according to its own website. It began in the early 1970s. We could not verify gating or other details, so check the committee's rules before you change a door style.

Tell us your cross street and whether the door is a single, a double or a pair, and we book the soonest visit. We weigh and balance each door before choosing new springs.

What Huntsville weather does to a garage door

Wikipedia's 1991-2020 normals give Huntsville a July mean daily high of 92.2 degrees, a January mean low of 39.3 and about 51 inches of rain a year. Rain and humid summers speed rust on springs, cables and hardware and rot bottom seals. Hot afternoons wear openers, and the record low of 1 degree stresses cables and weatherstripping in a rare hard freeze.

Entergy's outage lists named Walker County among the main areas without power after Hurricane Beryl in July 2024, and the company later said all Huntsville customers were restored. Falling pine limbs can dent panels and bend tracks, and a multi-day outage makes the manual release worth knowing. Entergy Texas also ran rolling outages during the February 2021 winter storm.

Twice a year, wipe the tracks, lubricate the rollers and hinges, and test the safety reverse. After a storm, look at the tracks and panels before you run the opener.

  • Check springs and cables for rust
  • Look for bent tracks after a storm
  • Know where the manual release is

Incredible honest work. Emil took care of all the repairs needed in order for my garage door to work again. I know I need a new garage door but I can't afford it right now this company was nice enough to fix it instead of hounding me for more money to get a new door. Emil was so nice that he even provided me a price. I was so happy he said I could call him when I had the money and he would honor me the price. amazing company to reach out to.Jasmine · Google review

Rules to know

Opener safety, permits and design rules in Huntsville

Opener safety. The federal standard for residential garage door operators (Consumer Product Safety Commission, 16 CFR part 1211) calls for automatic reversing and entrapment protection such as photo-eye sensors. If yours stopped working, we test the reverse and the sensors and repair or replace what failed. See opener installation.

Design rules. Planned communities and historic districts can limit door style and color. Ask before you choose a new door: new garage doors.

City permits. Huntsville, Texas is its own city. The Central Inspections and permits office is at 448 State Highway 75 N, phone 936-294-5717, and the city's site is huntsvilletx.gov. The city's FAQ says permits are required to construct, enlarge, alter, repair or move a structure, but it does not mention garage doors or openers, so we could not confirm whether a garage door replacement needs a permit. Ask the permits office before the work.

Historic review. The city has a Historic Preservation Commission under Chapter 17 of its Development Code. We could not verify which districts exist or whether garage door work needs review, so ask the city if your home is a landmark or in a district. Elkins Lake also has its own architectural committee.

Texas rules. We found no Texas statewide license for garage door contractors. A Texas Department of Public Safety page says installing garage door openers needs no DPS license unless the opener is connected to an alarm system or monitors or logs who comes and goes.

FAQ

Huntsville garage door repair: questions we hear

Is there garage door repair near me in Huntsville?

Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Huntsville (ZIP 77340) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (214) 382-3772, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.

What is the average price to repair a garage door in Huntsville?

Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.

What is the most common garage door repair in Huntsville?

Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.

How much is a service call for a garage door?

Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?

A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.

Which ZIP codes do you serve in Huntsville?

Huntsville's street ZIP codes are 77340 and 77320. The codes 77341, 77343, 77344 and 77348 serve single organizations and 77342 is for PO boxes. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.

Do you service garage doors in Elkins Lake?

Yes. Elkins Lake is a planned community inside Huntsville with an architectural committee that enforces deed restrictions. Check its rules on door style before you choose a new door, and tell us when you call so we can plan the visit.

Is this Huntsville, Texas?

Yes. This page is for Huntsville in Walker County, Texas, the home of Sam Houston State University, and not for Huntsville in another state.

Can a handyman fix a garage door?

A handyman can handle a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so we do not recommend fixing them yourself.

How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?

Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
