Small 1940s frame houses and 1970s and 1980s subdivisions
According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey, La Porte has about 13,800 housing units. About 74 percent are single-family detached houses and about 71 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied. The median year built is 1983, with the 1970s the largest decade at about 3,200 homes and the 1980s close behind, so original openers and springs are common. Wikipedia adds that the city has many small 1940s frame houses.
Listing data names Fairmont Park, Fairmont Park West and Fairmont Park East, with average build years of about 1965, 1978 and 1990 on the Houston Association of Realtors site, and the newer Lakes at Fairmont Greens, around the Bay Forest Golf Course, at about 2013. We found no master-planned community inside La Porte, so ask any neighbor association before you choose a new door.

My garage door spring broke the other evening and I was unable to open my door. I contacted them first thing the next day. They were able to give me an appointment for later in that day. The service technician called prior to arrival as promised & arrived shortly afterwards. He recommended some additional service to the door in addition to the springs which I accepted. The door was repaired in less than 2 hours & now works better than ever. Thank youBrandi · Google review

What La Porte weather does to a garage door
La Porte has no weather station of its own. Baytown, about 6 miles northeast, shows a July mean daily high near 92 degrees, a January mean low near 41 and about 65 inches of rain a year over roughly 111 wet days, according to NOAA 1991-2020 normals on Wikipedia. Humid air and salt air from Galveston Bay rust steel hardware, and heavy rain rots bottom seals.
The 1900 Galveston hurricane damaged the Sylvan Beach shoreline attractions, a hurricane and fire hit again in 1915, and a 1943 hurricane destroyed most of the Sylvan Beach attractions, according to Wikipedia. An EF2 tornado on October 31, 2015 damaged about 30 La Porte homes. Wind bends tracks and dents panels, and a long outage after a storm makes the manual release worth knowing.
Twice a year, wipe the tracks, lubricate the rollers and hinges, and test the safety reverse. After a storm, look for bent track sections and dented panels before you run the opener.
- Rinse and lubricate hardware in salty air
- Check the bottom seal after heavy rain
- Look at tracks and panels after strong wind

Opener safety, permits and design rules in La Porte
Safety reverse and sensors. A home garage door opener sold in the United States has to reverse the door on contact and have photo-eye sensors or an equivalent entrapment protection device, under the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission standard (16 CFR part 1211). A door that closes on an object, or an opener with dead sensors, needs repair before further use. See opener installation.
Associations. Check any HOA or historic district rules before you order a new door, and see new garage doors for style options.
City permits. La Porte is its own city. The Building Permit Services Center is at City Hall, 604 W. Fairmont Parkway, phone 281-470-5073, email Permits@LaPorteTX.gov, and permits and inspections run through the city's online self-service portal at laportetx.gov. Garage doors and openers are not named in the city's list of work that is exempt from a residential permit, and no La Porte page states whether a replacement needs one, so we could not confirm a rule. Ask the Permit Center first. The city says work in a floodplain needs a Floodplain Development Permit.
Wind rules. The city's 2020 code adoption ordinance lists a 150 mph basic design wind speed and says glazed garage door openings in windborne debris regions of new buildings or additions must be protected with an approved impact-resisting standard or ANSI/DASMA 115. We could not confirm where those regions are drawn or how the rule applies to a replacement on an existing home, so ask the Permit Center. The Texas Department of Insurance windstorm area covers only property inside city limits and east of State Highway 146, and La Porte straddles that road, so check your address on the TDI and TWIA map (TDI).
Texas rules. We found no Texas statewide license for garage door contractors. A Texas Department of Public Safety page says installing garage door or gate openers needs no DPS license unless the opener is connected to an alarm system or can log who comes and goes.

La Porte garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in La Porte?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in La Porte (ZIP 77571) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (214) 382-3772, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in La Porte?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in La Porte?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP code do you serve in La Porte?
La Porte's street ZIP code is 77571, which also serves nearby Morgan's Point and Shoreacres. The code 77572 is for PO boxes only. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.
Is my La Porte home in the Texas windstorm area?
Only property inside city limits and east of State Highway 146 is in the designated area, and La Porte straddles that road. Check your address on the TDI and TWIA map before you choose a door, because TDI has its own rules for windborne-debris-resistant products on exterior openings there.
Does La Porte have special wind rules for garage doors?
The city's code lists a 150 mph basic design wind speed, and for new buildings and additions in windborne debris regions it requires protection for glazed garage door openings. We could not confirm how it applies to a replacement on an existing home, so call the Building Permit Services Center.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can handle a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so we do not recommend fixing them yourself.
How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?
Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
