What Lockhart weather does to a garage door
Lockhart has no climate table on Wikipedia. The nearest published normals are for San Marcos, about 16 miles west, with a July mean high of 95.7 degrees, a January mean low of 38.9 and about 36.5 inches of rain a year. Hot summers wear opener motors, seals and rollers.
On the night of June 9, 2019, straight-line winds estimated at 70 to 80 mph by the National Weather Service hit Lockhart without a tornado. Overhead doors were damaged at a glass shop, the Exxon canopy on US 183 was destroyed, trees came down and about 2,500 customers lost power, according to the Post-Register. Wind like that bends light panels and pulls on loose track brackets. Lockhart ISD closed on February 16, 2021, because of the mid-February winter storm and rolling outages, so know where your manual release is.
Twice a year, wipe the tracks, check that the track brackets are tight, lubricate the rollers and hinges, and test the safety reverse.

Mid-1980s homes in a courthouse-square city
According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey, Lockhart has about 5,900 housing units. About 69 percent are single-family detached houses, about 6 percent are mobile homes, and about 67 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied. The median year built is 1986, so many original garage doors and openers are close to 40 years old.
Lockhart is the Caldwell County seat and has a historic downtown around the courthouse, with a Historical Preservation Officer listed on the city's site. We could not verify whether garage doors are reviewed there, so ask the city before changing a door in the historic area. Developer and news pages describe large new communities such as Blue Sky, Moxie and Juniper Springs, and we did not verify which of them lie inside city limits.
Tell us your street and whether the door is a single, a double or a pair, and we book the soonest visit. Older doors often need springs, cables and rollers replaced together, and we explain that before we start.

What customers say
Real reviews from our Google listing, copied as the customers wrote them.
I was really happy with the work Emil did for me. He was a responsive communicator, arrived on time, and did a quality job on the repair I needed. I would hire him again without hesitation.Serenity · Google review
Technician, Emil, was prompt and efficient to identify and fix the issues with our garage door. Rest assured that I won’t hesitate to call these folks if repair is needed.MeMee · Google review
Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina · Google review
"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela · Google review
Emil is delightful, knowledgeable, professional, and capable. He promised to make the process easy and he did. From our first contact Thursday mid-day through completion of the project Saturday at Noon, everything was 100% perfect, and we are extremely happy. We are amazed when we look outside and see our beautiful new door, so soon after searching on google. Emil and his company deserve 100 stars but we are limited to only 5Dawn · Google review
It went very well, with the job being completed in three days. We waited few months for the supply chain to kick in ( Covid related delays ) and finally deliver the products. It was so worth the wait. Great installers, Emil and his team are professional and friendly, too, and patient in answering questions.Rachel · Google review

What your garage door is telling you in Lockhart
A starting point. We confirm the cause on site.
| The door does this | Common cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| The door is heavy and will not stay up | A spring has lost tension or broken | Replace the springs as a set and rebalance the door |
| The door jumped off its track | A bent track or a broken roller | Straighten or replace the track, replace rollers, reset the door |
| The opener runs but nothing moves | A stripped gear, broken spring or a disconnected door | Test the opener, repair or replace the failed part |
| The door closes crooked | A stretched or slipped cable | Replace the cable and level the door |
| The remote works only close to the door | A weak battery, receiver or antenna | Replace the battery and test the receiver |
Do not run a door that is crooked or heavy.
Opener safety, permits and design rules in Lockhart
Opener safety. Federal rules (the Consumer Product Safety Commission's standard for automatic residential garage door operators, 16 CFR part 1211) require openers made for homes to reverse the door when it meets an obstruction and to have a separate entrapment protection device, which on most openers is the pair of photo-eye sensors near the floor. If your opener ignores the sensors or does not reverse, stop using it and call us. See opener installation.
HOAs and style rules. If you live in a planned community or a historic district, check style and color rules before you choose a new door. See new garage doors for styles.
City permits. Lockhart is its own city, so its rules come from the City of Lockhart. City Hall is at 308 W. San Antonio Street, main line 512-398-3461, and the permit desk can be reached at 512-376-9939. The city's FAQ says permits are needed for work in the public right-of-way and that tree removal and historic-district work need approval first, but it does not mention doors or garage doors. We could not confirm whether a garage door replacement needs a permit, so call the city before the work or visit cityoflockhart.gov.
Texas rules. We did not find a Texas state page that requires a license for garage door contractors, but we could not confirm the state's position either. A Texas Department of Public Safety page says installing only garage door openers or gate operators, with the wall buttons, remotes and keypads that only activate them, needs no DPS license, unless the operator is tied to an alarm system or can monitor or log who comes and goes.

Lockhart garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Lockhart?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Lockhart (ZIP 78644) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (214) 382-3772, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Lockhart?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Lockhart?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP code do you serve in Lockhart?
Lockhart has one standard ZIP code, 78644. It also covers Mendoza and Seawillow and reaches beyond the city limits, so tell us your street address and we will confirm we reach it.
Can high wind damage a garage door in Lockhart?
Yes. Straight-line winds in June 2019 damaged overhead doors in town. Wind can bend panels, loosen track brackets and push a door out of its track. If your door is off its track, stop using the opener and call us.
Do I need a permit to replace a garage door in Lockhart?
We could not confirm a garage-door-specific rule. The city's FAQ does not mention garage doors. Call Lockhart City Hall at 512-398-3461 or the permit desk at 512-376-9939 before a replacement.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can handle a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so we do not recommend fixing them yourself.
How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?
Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
