Called the office to let them know my issues and asked if we could get someone out to look at my door. Was told between 11-12...drove home from work at 11:05 and Emil was waiting and ready to get to work. Not knowing anything about how to fix a garage door, Emil did a great job explaining why I was having issues. Quoted a reasonable price (well at least what I thought was reasonable) and less than 40 minute later he had fixed the problem. Great customer service from intake of the call to fixing my door! If you need a garage door repair...support local business and give them your business, you won't be disappointed.Guadalupe · Google review
My garage door and opener were pretty banged up and not working properly. Emil Garage Doors came out, did a thorough evaluation of door and all it's parts. Even though the previous home owner rigged up the garage door opener with the wrong springs and parts, Emil repaired the door and saved us money by using some of the old parts. That kind of honesty will get 5 stars all day long. Thank you Emil Garage Doors for your great service.Bradford · Google review
I woke up to a loud crash when a tree in my front yard fell over and hit my garage door. Emil Garage Doors was able to give be a really good price on a new garage door. They uninstalled the old, damaged door and realigned the tracks the garage door connects to which had been damaged as well. The new door looks great and most importantly functions well. Thank you for going above and beyond in my time of need!Stuart · Google review
They were able to come within a few hours of my call. Another company could only give me a 4 hour window of arrival time the next day, but these guys was able to give me a 2 hour window the same day. One the guys called before arriving. He was friendly and competent in explaining the problem and our options. I was so grateful he had replacement springs and was able to fix our garage door in less than an hour.David · Google review
Not paying attention I closed the garage door on a pipe laying in the track. Needless to say it did some damage even though the automatic reverse opened the door back up. Emailed what happened on Sunday evening. Appointment with quote provided in just a few minutes and appointment confirmed. Once again they arrived on time. Completed repairs quickly and for less then the quote. Cleaned up like they were never there. I highly recommend them and will continue to use them for my garage door repairs.Carroll · Google review

A county-seat city of homes built around 1980
According to the Census Bureau's 2024 five-year American Community Survey, Sherman has about 19,800 housing units. About 67 percent are single-family detached houses and about 53 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied, so rentals are common. The median year built is 1980, which means the original doors and openers on many homes are more than 40 years old and are often on a second set of springs.
Wikipedia says the Texas Instruments fab campus south of downtown broke ground in 2022 and began operations in late 2025, so newer subdivisions and newer doors are going up beside older streets near the courthouse. We could not verify the building materials or the homeowner associations in either part of town, so tell us what you have when you call.
Tell us your cross street and whether the door is a single, a double or a pair, and we book the soonest visit. We weigh and balance each door before choosing new springs.
- Original springs and openers on homes from about 1980
- Rental homes with worn or neglected doors
- Wide doors on newer south-side homes

What your garage door is telling you in Sherman
A starting point. We confirm the cause on site.
| The door does this | Common cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| The door is heavy and will not stay up | A spring has lost tension or broken | Replace the springs as a set and rebalance the door |
| The door jumped off its track | A bent track or a broken roller | Straighten or replace the track, replace rollers, reset the door |

What Sherman weather does to a garage door
Wikipedia's 1991-2020 normals give Sherman a July mean daily high of 92.5 degrees, a January mean daily low of 33.9 and about 44 inches of precipitation a year. Summer heat wears seals, springs and opener circuits, and a hard freeze stiffens lubricant on rollers and hinges.
Sherman has seen serious tornadoes. An F5 tornado in May 1896 killed 73 people, according to Wikipedia, and the National Weather Service confirmed an EF1 tornado along Rockport Road in southwest Sherman on a Sunday night in June 2025 that tipped a trailer at the Texas Instruments campus and snapped trees. A local news report says storms in September 2025 left hail and power outages across Grayson County. Hail dents panels, wind bends tracks, and the February 2021 winter storm cut power for millions of Texans, so know where your manual release is.
Twice a year, wipe the tracks, lubricate the rollers and hinges, and test the safety reverse. After a storm, look for bent track sections and dented panels before you run the opener.
- Check tracks and panels after hail or wind
- Lubricate rollers and hinges twice a year

Opener safety, permits and design rules in Sherman
Opener safety. Federal rules (the Consumer Product Safety Commission's standard for automatic residential garage door operators, 16 CFR part 1211) require openers made for homes to reverse the door when it meets an obstruction and to have a separate entrapment protection device, which on most openers is the pair of photo-eye sensors near the floor. If your opener ignores the sensors or does not reverse, stop using it and call us. See opener installation.
HOAs and style rules. If you live in a planned community or a historic district, check style and color rules before you choose a new door. See new garage doors for styles.
City permits. Sherman is its own city, so its rules come from the City of Sherman. Development Services is at 317 S. Travis Street, with the Building line at 903-892-7229, and permits are handled through the city's online self-service portal at ci.sherman.tx.us. The city page says the department issues permits for construction, renovation, electrical, plumbing and HVAC work and handles contractor registration, but it does not mention garage doors or openers. We could not confirm whether replacing a garage door or an opener needs a permit, so call Building before the work.
Texas rules. We found no Texas statewide license for garage door contractors. A Texas Department of Public Safety page dated 2020 says installing garage door or gate openers needs no DPS license unless the opener is connected to an alarm system or can log who comes and goes.

Sherman garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Sherman?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Sherman (ZIP 75090) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (214) 382-3772, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Sherman?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Sherman?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP codes do you serve in Sherman?
Sherman's street ZIP codes are 75090 and 75092. 75091 is for PO boxes only. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.
Do you repair garage doors after a tornado or hail storm in Sherman?
Yes. Hail can dent steel panels and strong wind can bend a track or push a door out of its frame. We inspect the track, panels, springs and opener, explain what we find and quote the price before we start.
Do I need a permit to replace a garage door in Sherman?
We could not confirm that. The City of Sherman's Development Services page lists permits for construction, renovation and electrical work but does not mention garage doors or openers. Call the Building line before you order a new door.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can handle a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so we do not recommend fixing them yourself.
How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?
Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
