A smelter-era town with 1950s to 1970s housing
According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey (five-year estimates), Murray has about 21,600 housing units and a median year built of 1978. About 53 percent are single-family detached houses, about 28 percent are in buildings of five or more units, and about 65 percent of homes are owner-occupied. Roughly 54 percent of the housing was built before 1980, and the 1970s alone are about 26 percent, so many original doors, springs and openers are 45 years old or more.
Wikipedia says smelting drove Murray's economy for decades, until the ASARCO lead smelter closed in 1949, and calls the city the Hub of Salt Lake County. It names the Fireclay neighborhood, a transit-oriented area around the Murray North TRAX station, and Bergertown, a historic area south of 4800 South, and has articles on the Murray Downtown Historic District and the Murray Downtown Residential Historic District. We could not verify whether any rule for those districts touches garage doors, so ask the city before you change a door there.
Tell us your cross street and whether the door is a single, a double or a pair, and we book the soonest visit. We weigh and balance each door before we choose new springs.

What Murray weather does to a garage door
Wikipedia's climate table for Murray gives a January average high of 39 degrees and low of 25, a July average high of 89 and low of 67, and about 15.7 inches of precipitation a year. Snowfall is not in the table, so we leave it out. Cold like that stiffens rubber bottom seals and lubricant and loads springs and cables, and summer heat is hard on openers and weatherstripping.
Wind is the other test. In the September 8, 2020 windstorm, gusts reached 99 mph in northern Utah and more than 170,000 homes and businesses lost power, and the Salt Lake Tribune named Murray among the Salt Lake County areas most heavily affected by outages. We found no Murray gust figure. Wind can bend a track or push a light door out of its frame, and an outage leaves the opener dead until you pull the manual release.
Before winter, wipe the bottom seal, lubricate the rollers and hinges and test the safety reverse. After a windstorm, look over the tracks and panels before you run the opener.
- Check the bottom seal before it freezes
- Know where the manual release is for outages

What customers say
Real reviews from our Google listing, copied as the customers wrote them.
It went very well, with the job being completed in three days. We waited few months for the supply chain to kick in ( Covid related delays ) and finally deliver the products. It was so worth the wait. Great installers, Emil and his team are professional and friendly, too, and patient in answering questions.Rachel · Google review
We interviewed several popular companies and we found that their quality, price, and level of professionalism is unmatched!Cory · Google review

Great company to use for garage door work. Came out promptly, over a weekend when I could not get others to respond. Efficient work, very knowledgeable, very friendly. I would not hesitate to contact them first the next time I need service.Courtney · Google review
Incredible honest work. Emil took care of all the repairs needed in order for my garage door to work again. I know I need a new garage door but I can't afford it right now this company was nice enough to fix it instead of hounding me for more money to get a new door. Emil was so nice that he even provided me a price. I was so happy he said I could call him when I had the money and he would honor me the price. amazing company to reach out to.Jasmine · Google review

Opener safety. The federal standard for residential garage door operators (Consumer Product Safety Commission, 16 CFR part 1211) calls for automatic reversing and entrapment protection such as photo-eye sensors. If yours stopped working, we test the reverse and the sensors and repair or replace what failed. See opener installation.
Design rules. Planned communities and historic districts can limit door style and color. Ask before you choose a new door: new garage doors.
City permits. Murray is its own city, so permits come from the Building Division at 10 E 4800 S, Suite 260, phone 801-270-2431, permits@murray.utah.gov, open Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with applications online (murray.utah.gov). The division's page does not say when a permit is required and does not mention doors, garage doors or openers. We could not confirm whether a garage door replacement needs a permit, so ask the division before the work.
State rules. Under Utah Code 58-55-305, repair or improvement work valued under $7,000 may be done without a contractor license, and on a job over $3,000 the person files a one-time affirmation with the Division of Professional Licensing that they carry public liability insurance. Electrical work on such a job must be done by an electrician or electrical contractor who holds the state electrical license. Utah rule R156-55a-301 lists garage doors in the scope of the S220 Carpentry and Flooring Contractor classification. You can check any contractor at dopl.utah.gov.

Murray garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Murray?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Murray (ZIP 84107) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (801) 980-3670, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Murray?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Murray?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP codes do you serve in Murray?
Murray's ZIP codes are 84107, 84117, 84121 and 84123, according to Wikipedia and zip-codes.com. Several are shared with Holladay, Millcreek and Salt Lake City, and 84157 is for PO boxes only. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.
Do you repair garage doors in the Murray historic districts?
Yes. Murray has a downtown historic district and a downtown residential historic district. We could not verify whether their rules touch garage doors, so check with the city before you change a door, and tell us when you call so we can plan the visit.
Do you repair garage doors after a windstorm in Murray?
Yes. Strong wind can bend a track, push a light door out of its frame or leave an opener without power. We inspect the track, panels, springs and opener, explain what we find and quote the price before we start.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can handle a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so we do not recommend fixing them yourself.
How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?
Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
