What West Haven weather does to a garage door
Wikipedia has no climate table for West Haven. For numbers, nearby Ogden shows a January average high of 35.7 degrees and low of 21.2, a July average high of 91.3 and low of 64.8, and about 16.4 inches of precipitation a year, with snow usually from late October or early November to April. Cold like that stiffens rubber bottom seals and lubricant and loads springs and cables, and summer heat is hard on openers and weatherstripping.
Wind is the other test. KSL reported gusts up to 70 mph in Weber County on April 30 and May 1, 2016, with about 39,000 Rocky Mountain Power customers in Weber and Davis counties losing power. In the September 8, 2020 windstorm, the Utah Highway Patrol restricted semitrailer travel in Box Elder, Weber and Davis counties, according to the Deseret News. Neither report names West Haven, and we found no West Haven gust figure. Wind can bend a track, and an outage leaves the opener dead until you pull the manual release.
Before winter, wipe the bottom seal, lubricate the rollers and hinges and test the safety reverse. After a windstorm, look over the tracks and panels before you run the opener.
- Check the bottom seal before it freezes
- Know where the manual release is for outages
- Look over tracks and panels after a windstorm

A young city where most homes are less than 25 years old
According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey (five-year estimates), West Haven has about 7,200 housing units and a median year built of 2011. About 59 percent are single-family detached houses, about 11 percent are attached houses, about 23 percent are in buildings of five or more units and about 71 percent of homes are owner-occupied. The 2010s are the largest decade at roughly 39 percent, about 76 percent of the housing was built in 2000 or later and only about 8 percent before 1980, so most doors are newer and the work is often a first spring or opener replacement.
Wikipedia says West Haven was incorporated on July 1, 1991, combining the communities of Kanesville and Wilson, and that the Weber and Ogden Rivers meet in the northeastern part of the city. It also says the city bought 40 acres for a park in 1994 and installed a citywide sewer system in 2002. We could not verify homeowner associations or building materials, so check with your association or the city before you change the style of a door.
Tell us your cross street and whether the door is a single, a double or a pair, and we book the soonest visit. We weigh and balance each door before we choose new springs.
- First-generation springs and openers on 1990s and 2000s homes
- Newer doors on homes built since 2010
- A few older doors on pre-1980 homes

What customers say
Real reviews from our Google listing, copied as the customers wrote them.
Great to work with, gave us good advise and very knowledgeable with garage door springs . We could not find anyone to do our repair ASAP as it was a small project, but that did not matter to them. They traveled 2 hours to get the work done. Tech who did our repair was very personable, fast and did an excellent job.Theresa · Google review
I was really happy with the work Emil did for me. He was a responsive communicator, arrived on time, and did a quality job on the repair I needed. I would hire him again without hesitation.Serenity · Google review
Technician, Emil, was prompt and efficient to identify and fix the issues with our garage door. Rest assured that I won’t hesitate to call these folks if repair is needed.MeMee · Google review
Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina · Google review
"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela · Google review
Emil is delightful, knowledgeable, professional, and capable. He promised to make the process easy and he did. From our first contact Thursday mid-day through completion of the project Saturday at Noon, everything was 100% perfect, and we are extremely happy. We are amazed when we look outside and see our beautiful new door, so soon after searching on google. Emil and his company deserve 100 stars but we are limited to only 5Dawn · Google review

Opener safety, permits and design rules in West Haven
Opener safety. Federal rules (the Consumer Product Safety Commission's standard for automatic residential garage door operators, 16 CFR part 1211) require openers made for homes to reverse the door when it meets an obstruction and to have a separate entrapment protection device, which on most openers is the pair of photo-eye sensors near the floor. If your opener ignores the sensors or does not reverse, stop using it and call us. See opener installation.
HOAs and style rules. If you live in a planned community or a historic district, check style and color rules before you choose a new door. See new garage doors for styles.
City permits. West Haven is its own city, so permits come from the city's Building Department, phone 385-389-2690, open 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday to Thursday. City Hall is at 4150 S 3900 W, phone 801-731-4519. The department's page says it issues permits for new construction, additions to and remodeling of existing buildings and structures, and does not list specific work or mention garage doors, doors or openers. We could not confirm whether a garage door replacement needs a permit, so ask the department before the work or visit westhavenut.gov.
State rules. Under Utah Code 58-55-305, repair or improvement work valued under $7,000 may be done without a contractor license, and on a job over $3,000 the person files a one-time affirmation with the Division of Professional Licensing that they carry public liability insurance. Electrical work on such a job must be done by an electrician or electrical contractor who holds the state electrical license. Utah rule R156-55a-301 lists garage doors in the scope of the S220 Carpentry and Flooring Contractor classification. You can check any contractor at dopl.utah.gov.

West Haven garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in West Haven?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in West Haven (ZIP 84401) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (801) 980-3670, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in West Haven?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in West Haven?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP code do you serve in West Haven?
West Haven uses ZIP code 84401, which it shares with Ogden, according to Wikipedia and zip-codes.com. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.
Do you repair garage doors in newer West Haven neighborhoods?
Yes. Census figures show about three quarters of West Haven's housing was built in 2000 or later, so we often replace a first set of springs or an original opener. Call with your address and we confirm the visit window.
Do you repair garage doors after a windstorm in West Haven?
Yes. Strong wind can bend a track, push a light door out of its frame or leave an opener without power. We inspect the track, panels, springs and opener, explain what we find and quote the price before we start.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can handle a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so we do not recommend fixing them yourself.
How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?
Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
