A torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450. Heavy-duty springs for heavy, wood or oversized doors are $350 to $900, and one torsion spring is $180 to $300. Extension springs are $150 to $300 a pair. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.

1Spring prices at a glance
Springs are priced by type, strength and door. These are the prices Emil Garage Doors uses, not a state average. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
| Spring job | Price | What changes it |
|---|---|---|
| Torsion spring pair, standard two-car door (10,000 cycle) | $250 to $450 | Door weight and size |
| Heavy-duty torsion springs (25,000+ cycle, heavy, wood or oversized doors) | $350 to $900 | Door weight, spring wire size and cycle rating |
| One torsion spring | $180 to $300 | We usually replace both, because the second spring is the same age |

2Why the cycle rating matters
A cycle is one full trip up and down. Clopay says most garage door springs are designed to last 10,000 cycles. Garaga puts the average life at about 5 to 7 years for a door opened three to five times a day, and says rust and cold weather can also affect a spring.
A higher cycle rating lasts longer and costs more, which is why heavy-duty springs sit higher in the table. A busy household reaches 10,000 cycles sooner than a rarely used door, so ask for the rating on the quote.
3One spring or both
Clopay recommends replacing both springs at the same time because they are wear parts. They are installed together and wear together, so when one breaks the other is close behind. A single spring costs less today, and a second visit costs more later.
A matched pair also keeps the door balanced. Springs of different ages can make a door lift unevenly.
4Torsion or extension springs
Torsion springs
- Mounted on a shaft above the door
- Common on newer and heavier doors
- Priced as a pair or one at a time
Extension springs
- Run along the sides of the door
- Common on lighter, older doors
- Use safety cables and are priced as a pair
Both store a lot of force. Garaga warns that a broken spring can let the door fall rapidly and says a professional should always be called.
5Questions to ask before the work
- Are the springs torsion or extension, and what is the wire size?
- What is the cycle rating?
- Is one spring or the pair being replaced?
- Are cables, drums and bearings checked or replaced?
- What is the total, in writing, with labor included?
Washington Labor & Industries advises verifying the company's registration, comparing at least three written bids and paying for completed phases of work rather than the whole amount up front.

6Signs a spring has failed
A loud bang from the garage, a visible gap in the coil, a door that will not lift or feels very heavy, and an opener that strains are the usual signs. Stop using the door. Do not wind or remove a spring. For other repair numbers, see garage door repair cost in Washington.
