The Willamette Valley is wet from October to May and dry in summer, with mild winters and the occasional cold snap. A garage door here works hardest in the rainy months, so check seals, rollers and the track before October. Stop using any door that is heavy, crooked, off track or has a broken spring or cable.
What the valley climate asks of a door
The National Weather Service says nearly 90 percent of the rain in Salem and Eugene falls between early October and mid-May, and only about 2 percent falls in July and August. On the valley floor around Salem the yearly total is 35 to 45 inches, and in the heart of the south valley near Eugene it is about 40 to 50 inches.
That means a garage door spends most of the year in damp air with rain blowing against the panels and the bottom seal. The same reports describe mild winters, with daytime highs in the mid 40s to lower 50s and nights in the 30s, and dry summers that often reach the lower to middle 90s.

What to check by season
| Season | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Late summer | Bottom seal, side seals, rollers, track bolts | Fix worn parts before the rain starts in October |
| Fall and winter | Water at the bottom edge, rust on hinges, a door that sticks or runs slow | Constant damp is hard on moving parts and seals |
| Cold snaps | Ice at the bottom edge, a door that groans or jerks | Do not force a frozen door with the opener |
| Spring | Balance by hand, cables, springs, remote and keypad batteries | A full check after the wet months finds wear early |
| Summer | Wash the panels, check the sensors, test the auto-reverse | Dry weeks are a good time for planned work |

Cold snaps and freezing rain
Most of the valley sees little snow. The reports give an average of only four days a year with measurable snow, and accumulations are rarely more than two inches. The bigger surprise is cold air from east of the Cascades: it can slip through the Columbia River Gorge and fill the valley, and if a wet Pacific front arrives on top of it, the result is freezing rain, sleet or snow.
If the bottom of the door is frozen to the floor, do not keep pressing the button. The opener can pull the door crooked or strain the springs and cables. Pull the red release handle, clear the ice and lift the door slowly by hand. If it feels heavy or will not move, call a technician. Never adjust a spring or cable yourself.

How to choose a repair company
Ask for a written quote that lists each part and the labor. Ask whether both springs will be replaced, because the second spring is the same age as the one that broke. Ask what cycle rating the new springs have and how long the visit will take. A clear answer to each question tells you more than any promise.
Our approved starting prices are in the cost posts, and the final price is confirmed after we see the door. A 12-point safety inspection is $89.

Questions people ask
How does the Willamette Valley climate affect a garage door?
Long wet months keep the seals, hinges and rollers damp, and the door has to be checked before and after the rainy season. Dry summers are a good time for planned repairs.
Does it snow enough in the valley to matter for a garage door?
Usually not. The National Weather Service gives an average of only four days a year with measurable snow in Salem and Eugene. Freezing rain during a cold-air event is the bigger risk.
When should I service a garage door in the valley?
Late summer, before the rain starts, is a practical time to replace worn seals and rollers. Spring is a good time for a full check after the wet months.
My door will not open after a cold night. What should I do?
Pull the red release handle, clear any ice from the bottom edge and lift the door by hand. If it is heavy, crooked or off track, stop and call a technician.
