What the ocean and the bay do to a gate
Coronado has the Pacific on one side and San Diego Bay on the other. A WeatherSpark summary for Naval Air Station North Island puts the warmest month, August, at an average high near 75 degrees, which is gentle on batteries. Salt in the air is the bigger concern, because it corrodes steel hinges, bolts, rollers and electronics.
Coronado Times reported king tides on December 4 to 6, 2025 and listed low-lying areas that flood in storms, including Coronado Avenue between Sixth Street and Acacia Way, the Fourth Street and Alameda Boulevard area and Strand Way near the Boathouse. A snippet of another report says January 2024 rain and high tides caused record flooding. Control boxes and keypads near the ground can fail when wet.
Rinse salt from hinges and tracks every few months, check keypads and control boxes after a tide or storm and test the backup battery.
- Rinse salt from hinges and tracks every few months
- Check keypads and control boxes after high tides
- Test the backup battery before winter

Older island homes, condos and the Cays
Coronado is a narrow island city, joined to the mainland by the Silver Strand. According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey estimates, the median home was built in 1974, about 46 percent of housing units are single-family detached, about 12 percent are attached homes and about 21 percent are in buildings with 50 or more units. About 55 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied.
Coronado Cays, a waterfront community at the south end, has about ten villages, according to Coronado Times and the San Diego Business Journal. Some are gated and some are not, and we could not verify which. Each village has its own association, so check its rules before you change a gate.
On older island homes and Cays entries alike, we check the gate, its hinges and track and then test the operator and the safety devices.

- Shared entries at condos and Cays villages

Why gates in Coronado stop working
Some of these have a quick check you can try. If they do not solve it, call us.
| What you notice | Likely cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Sliding gate jumps or scrapes on its track | Worn wheels, a dirty or bent track or a loose guide roller | Clean and straighten the track, replace wheels and rollers |
| Gate opens by itself or will not stay closed | A stuck input, a loop or sensor fault, or a loose latch | Trace the input, repair the sensor, realign the latch |
| Keypad or intercom is dead | Water in the unit, a wiring fault or a failed unit | Test the wiring, dry out or replace the keypad or intercom |
| Swing gate will not latch | The gate has dropped or the strike has moved | Realign the gate and the latch |
| Operator is slow or noisy | Dry hinges or bearings, a worn gear or arm, or a weak battery | Lubricate, replace the worn part, test the battery |
| Gate opens one way only | A limit setting, an obstruction or a failed board input | Reset the limits, clear the path, test the board |
Never stand in the path of an automatic gate while you test it.
What customers say
Real reviews from our Google listing, copied as the customers wrote them.
"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela Β· Google review
Emil is delightful, knowledgeable, professional, and capable. He promised to make the process easy and he did. From our first contact Thursday mid-day through completion of the project Saturday at Noon, everything was 100% perfect, and we are extremely happy. We are amazed when we look outside and see our beautiful new door, so soon after searching on google. Emil and his company deserve 100 stars but we are limited to only 5Dawn Β· Google review
It went very well, with the job being completed in three days. We waited few months for the supply chain to kick in ( Covid related delays ) and finally deliver the products. It was so worth the wait. Great installers, Emil and his team are professional and friendly, too, and patient in answering questions.Rachel Β· Google review

Permits, HOAs and emergency access in Coronado
City permits. Coronado's Building Services office is at City Hall, 1825 Strand Way, phone (619) 522-7331, and the city site is coronado.ca.us. We could not confirm whether a gate, a gate operator or its wiring needs a permit, so ask Building Services before a new gate or new electrical work.
Historic and coastal review. Coronado applies historic review to properties 75 or more years old that are not Tier 3, and a Historic Resource Alteration Permit is separate from a building permit. The city also has a Local Coastal Program, so it issues coastal development permits. We could not confirm whether a gate falls under either rule, so ask the city before changing the exterior of an older or waterfront property.
Emergency access. Gates can affect how fire and police reach a property. Ask the local fire department about key switch or Knox box requirements before you install or change a locked entry.
HOAs. If your neighborhood has an HOA with an architectural review board, ask before you change the design or color of a gate. We can write a scope of work for the review.
Safety standard. Automatic gate operators are covered by the UL 325 safety standard, which calls for entrapment protection such as photo eyes or safety edges. We test those devices before the gate goes back into service.

Coronado gate repair: questions we hear
Is there gate repair near me in Coronado?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs swing and sliding driveway gates in Coronado (ZIP 92118) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (213) 340-4232, tell us your street or neighborhood, the gate type and what it does, and we book the soonest visit. See gate repair near me.
Is there electric gate repair near me in Coronado?
Yes. Electric gate repair near me in Coronado means a technician who repairs the operator, control board, sensors, remotes and backup battery as well as the gate itself. Call (213) 340-4232 and we book the soonest visit. See electric gate repair.
What is the difference between gate repair and electric gate repair in Coronado?
Gate repair means the gate itself: hinges, posts, latches, wheels, tracks and frames. Electric gate repair means the parts that move it: the operator, control board, sensors, remotes, keypads and battery. Most service calls need both checked, so we start with the gate and then test the electronics. See gate repair.
Why does my electric gate hum but not open?
A humming operator with a gate that will not move usually means the gate is jammed or a part in the operator has failed, such as a capacitor or gear. Stop using it and call us before the motor burns out.
How much does gate repair cost in Coronado?
The price depends on what failed, the size and weight of the gate and the parts. We quote after we see the gate or photos, and before work starts.
My gate does not work during a power outage. What can I do?
Most operators have a manual release, and many can use a backup battery. Use the release as the manufacturer directs and call us. We test the battery and the control board, because a flat battery or a board that lost its settings after an outage is common.
Should electric gates be serviced?
Yes. A yearly check of the battery, sensors, hinges or track, and operator keeps a gate from failing at a bad time.
Can you repair a gate operator from any brand?
We repair most residential operators. Tell us the brand and model, or send a photo of the unit. If parts are no longer made we explain your options.
Which ZIP code do you serve in Coronado?
Coronado uses ZIP code 92118, which carries the USPS alias San Diego. ZIP 92178 is a PO box ZIP with no residents. Call us with your address if you are not sure we reach you.
Does salt air shorten the life of a gate in Coronado?
Salt in ocean and bay air can corrode steel hinges, bolts, rollers and electronics faster than inland air. Rinsing and lubricating the hinges and tracks and having the controls checked helps, and we replace corroded parts when we repair a gate.
Does a historic home change what I can do to a gate?
Coronado has a historic review process. A property that is 75 or more years old and not Tier 3 in the Citywide Historic Resources Inventory is subject to review, and the city's historic staff can tell you whether a gate counts as an exterior change. Ask the city before you alter the front of an older home.
Can a handyman fix a gate?
A handyman can handle a loose latch or a dead remote battery. A failed operator, a control board or a gate that has dropped off its hinges needs a technician who can test the controls and the safety devices.
Do you repair garage doors in Coronado too?
Yes. See garage door repair in Coronado for springs, cables, openers and new doors, and garage door repair near me. When you ask for both we can look at the gate and the garage door at the same address.
