Wrought iron is heavy, strong and ornate. Aluminum is light, resists rust and suits a smaller operator. Wood gives warmth and privacy but is heavy and needs regular sealing or staining. The weight of the gate sets the operator and hinges you need, so pick the material and the opener together.
The short version
Each material trades something. Iron gives strength and a classic look at the cost of weight. Aluminum is easier on hinges and openers but less rugged. Wood is the warmest and most private, and the one that asks the most upkeep. The comparison below is based on gate maker and dealer guides, so treat it as a starting point and ask about your exact design.

Wrought iron against aluminum
Wrought iron
- Heavy, so it needs more support and a more powerful operator
- Strong, ornate and can be worked into intricate designs
- Needs a powder coating or paint to keep rust away
- Often higher in cost up front
Aluminum
- Light, about 2.5 times lighter than steel and iron gates according to one gate maker
- Naturally rust-resistant
- Not as strong, and it can dent more easily
- Screwed-in pickets may need tightening over time
Where wood fits
- A dealer guide says wood is heavier than the metal options, which means stronger hinges and a stronger opener.
- Wood needs regular sealing, staining or painting.
- Untreated or poorly kept wood can rot, warp or attract termites.
- A solid wood gate hides the driveway, so it suits owners who want privacy.
Weight decides the opener
Gate operators are rated for a gate's weight and usage class, and a Viking operator manual says the operator must be appropriate for the construction and usage class of the gate. A heavy iron or wood gate asks more of the hinges and the operator than an aluminum gate of the same size, and it hurts more if it drops. If you plan to add an opener later, choose the material with that in mind.
See sliding or swing gate for how the layout affects the opener too.
Open pickets and sliding gates
For a sliding gate, the same Viking manual says all openings must be guarded or screened from the bottom of the gate to at least 6 feet above the ground, so that a 2-1/4 inch sphere cannot pass through the gate or the adjacent fence it covers when open. Widely spaced pickets may need a backing panel, which changes the look and the weight. Ask the installer how the design meets this before you order.

How to decide
- Strength and a traditional look: wrought iron, with a plan for repainting and a sturdy opener.
- Lower upkeep and a lighter load on hinges and the operator: aluminum.
- Privacy and a natural look: wood, if you will keep it sealed.
- Very large opening: a lighter gate is easier to move, so check what the maker recommends for the span.
- Existing opener: match the new gate's weight to the operator's rating, or budget to replace the operator.

Questions people ask
Is aluminum or wrought iron better for a driveway gate?
Neither wins on every point. Aluminum is lighter and resists rust, while wrought iron is stronger and heavier and needs a protective coating. Pick by weight, upkeep and the opener you will use.
Do wood gates need more maintenance than metal gates?
Yes, according to dealer guides. Wood needs sealing, staining or painting and can rot or warp if neglected.
Does gate weight affect the opener I need?
Yes. Operators are matched to the gate's weight and usage class, and a heavier gate needs stronger hinges and a stronger operator.
Can I put an automatic opener on any gate?
Not always. The gate must be built for the opener, work freely in both directions and meet UL 325 requirements such as guarded openings on a sliding gate.
