Why gates in El Monte stop working
A starting point. We confirm the cause on site.
| The gate does this | Common cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Gate does nothing at all | No power, a tripped breaker or a dead battery | Check power, breaker and battery, then the control board |
| Motor hums, gate does not move | A binding gate, a worn gear or arm, or a failed capacitor | Free the gate, then repair or replace the failed part |
| Gate stops halfway or reverses | A blocked or misaligned sensor, a safety edge or a force setting | Clean and realign the sensors, test the edge, reset the force |
| Gate sags or drags on the ground | Worn hinges, a post that has shifted or a heavy frame | Reset hinges and posts, brace or square the frame |
| Remote works only up close | A weak remote battery, receiver or antenna | Replace the battery, test the receiver and the range |
| Dead after a power cut | A drained or failed backup battery | Test and replace the battery, check the charger |
Keep children, pets and vehicles clear of a gate that is leaning, dragging or damaged.

Older houses, many apartments and mostly renters
El Monte is a large San Gabriel Valley city about 7 miles long and 4 wide. According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey, the median home was built in 1965, about 54 percent of homes are single-family detached houses, about 24 percent are in buildings of five or more units, about 5 percent are mobile homes and only about 40 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied, so renters are the majority.
That mix means many gate calls come from property managers and landlords, and from shared entries at apartments and townhomes. Listing sites, which are not an official source, show some small gated townhome complexes, but we could not confirm a named gated or HOA community. If you rent, ask the owner or manager before authorizing a repair.
On a shared entry, a front-yard swing gate or a sliding driveway gate, we start with the gate itself and then test the operator, the sensors and the keypad or remote.

What the weather does to a gate
Wikipedia's climate table for El Monte, sourced to an archived weather.com page and so a weaker source, lists mean daily highs of 85 degrees in July, 87 in August and 85 in September, and about 18 inches of rain a year. Heat ages gate batteries, softens plastic sensor housings and dries out lubricants.
News summaries report that Southern California Edison shut off power to thousands of customers during Santa Ana winds in January 2025 and late October 2025, though those reports are not specific to El Monte. When the power goes, an electric gate depends on its backup battery or a manual release, and a shared apartment gate can leave many residents stuck at once.
Before summer, test the backup battery, lubricate the hinges and rollers and wipe the sensor lenses.
- Test the backup battery before summer
- Lubricate hinges and rollers each season
- Check that the manual release still works

Great to work with, gave us good advise and very knowledgeable with garage door springs . We could not find anyone to do our repair ASAP as it was a small project, but that did not matter to them. They traveled 2 hours to get the work done. Tech who did our repair was very personable, fast and did an excellent job.Theresa · Google review
I was really happy with the work Emil did for me. He was a responsive communicator, arrived on time, and did a quality job on the repair I needed. I would hire him again without hesitation.Serenity · Google review
Technician, Emil, was prompt and efficient to identify and fix the issues with our garage door. Rest assured that I won’t hesitate to call these folks if repair is needed.MeMee · Google review
Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina · Google review
"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela · Google review
Emil is delightful, knowledgeable, professional, and capable. He promised to make the process easy and he did. From our first contact Thursday mid-day through completion of the project Saturday at Noon, everything was 100% perfect, and we are extremely happy. We are amazed when we look outside and see our beautiful new door, so soon after searching on google. Emil and his company deserve 100 stars but we are limited to only 5Dawn · Google review

Permits, HOAs and emergency access in El Monte
City permits. El Monte's Building and Safety Division is part of Community and Economic Development at City Hall West, 11333 Valley Boulevard, (626) 580-2050, open Monday to Thursday and closed Fridays, with more on elmonteca.gov. The city pages we read do not address gates or gate operators, so we could not confirm a gate-specific rule. Call the division if you are changing the opening or the wiring.
Emergency access. Fire and police need a way in. Before you install or change a locked entry, ask the local fire department about key switches and Knox boxes.
HOA review. Many associations review exterior changes such as gates. Check yours before you change a gate's design or color.
UL 325. This safety standard covers automatic gate operators and calls for entrapment protection such as photo eyes or safety edges. We test them before we leave.

El Monte gate repair: questions we hear
Is there gate repair near me in El Monte?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs swing and sliding driveway gates in El Monte (ZIP codes 91731, 91732 and 91733) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (213) 340-4232, tell us your street or neighborhood, the gate type and what it does, and we book the soonest visit. See gate repair near me.
Is there electric gate repair near me in El Monte?
Yes. Electric gate repair near me in El Monte means a technician who repairs the operator, control board, sensors, remotes and backup battery as well as the gate itself. Call (213) 340-4232 and we book the soonest visit. See electric gate repair.
What is the difference between gate repair and electric gate repair in El Monte?
Gate repair means the gate itself: hinges, posts, latches, wheels, tracks and frames. Electric gate repair means the parts that move it: the operator, control board, sensors, remotes, keypads and battery. Most service calls need both checked, so we start with the gate and then test the electronics. See gate repair.
Why does my electric gate hum but not open?
The gate is probably binding, or a gear, arm or capacitor has failed. Do not keep running it, because that can burn out the motor. Call us and we free the gate and test the operator.
How much does gate repair cost in El Monte?
It depends on the gate type and the failed part. A remote, battery or sensor costs far less than a control board, an operator or a rebuilt post. We find the fault first, quote the price and start work only after you agree.
My gate does not work during a power outage. What can I do?
Most operators have a manual release, and many can use a backup battery. Use the release as the manufacturer directs and call us. We test the battery and the control board, because a flat battery or a board that lost its settings after an outage is common.
Should electric gates be serviced?
Yes. A yearly check of the battery, sensors, hinges or track, and operator keeps a gate from failing at a bad time.
Can you repair a gate operator from any brand?
We repair most residential operators. Tell us the brand and model, or send a photo of the unit. If parts are no longer made we explain your options.
Which ZIP codes do you serve in El Monte?
El Monte's street ZIP codes are 91731, 91732 and 91733. ZIP 91732 also carries the City of Industry alias, and 91733 is shared with South El Monte, so ZIP alone does not show the city. ZIP 91734 is PO boxes only. Call us with your address if you are not sure we reach you.
Can a property manager or tenant ask for a gate repair in El Monte?
Either can call us with the symptoms. For rental properties, the owner or manager usually authorizes the work, and a shared apartment gate often has an access control system that we test along with the operator.
Is El Monte in a wildfire zone?
A sample of points across the city on the state's fire hazard map all fell outside the wildfire zones, and the city is flat. Heat and power cuts are the bigger concern for gate operators and batteries.
Can a handyman fix a gate?
A handyman can handle a loose latch or a dead remote battery. A failed operator, a control board or a gate that has dropped off its hinges needs a technician who can test the controls and the safety devices.
Do you repair garage doors in El Monte too?
Yes. See garage door repair in El Monte for springs, cables, openers and new doors, and garage door repair near me. When you ask for both we can look at the gate and the garage door at the same address.
