What the foothills do to a gate
We found no station-level temperature or rainfall figures for Monrovia, so we will not quote any; summers here are hot and dry, which is hard on gate batteries and plastic sensor housings. Strong wind is the bigger story: HeySoCal reported that high winds knocked out power across Monrovia on October 15, 2018, leaving traffic signals dark and four schools without electricity.
In January 2025 Southern California Edison warned that parts of north Monrovia could see intentional power shutoffs for high winds, according to the local blog MonroviaNow. An electric gate with a weak backup battery can stay shut, or stay open, when the power goes, so the battery and the manual release matter before wind season.
Before the windy months, test the backup battery, learn where the manual release is and wipe the sensor lenses clean.
- Test the backup battery before wind season
- Know where the manual release is and how it works
- Wipe photo-eye lenses and clear debris from tracks

Foothill bungalows, apartments and individual estate gates
Monrovia is a foothill city at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains. According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey, the median home was built in 1962, about 58 percent of homes are single-family detached houses, about 23 percent are in buildings of five or more units and about 46 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied, so renters are the majority.
The city reviews demolition of buildings from before 1940, and the Los Angeles Conservancy names the Wildrose Tract as a historic district. Real-estate listings, which are not an official source, mention individual gated estate properties in the north of the city; we could not confirm a named gated or HOA community, so check your own association's rules.
Whether it is a small swing gate beside a bungalow, a sliding gate on a longer foothill drive or a shared entry at an apartment building, we start with the gate itself and then test the operator, the sensors and the keypad or remote.
- Gates on older bungalow and mid-century lots
- Estate and foothill driveways, including sloped ones
- Shared entries at apartments and townhomes

Why gates in Monrovia stop working
A starting point. We confirm the cause on site.
| The gate does this | Common cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Gate does nothing at all | No power, a tripped breaker or a dead battery | Check power, breaker and battery, then the control board |
| Motor hums, gate does not move | A binding gate, a worn gear or arm, or a failed capacitor | Free the gate, then repair or replace the failed part |
| Gate stops halfway or reverses | A blocked or misaligned sensor, a safety edge or a force setting | Clean and realign the sensors, test the edge, reset the force |
| Gate sags or drags on the ground | Worn hinges, a post that has shifted or a heavy frame | Reset hinges and posts, brace or square the frame |
| Remote works only up close | A weak remote battery, receiver or antenna | Replace the battery, test the receiver and the range |
| Dead after a power cut | A drained or failed backup battery | Test and replace the battery, check the charger |
Keep children, pets and vehicles clear of a gate that is leaning, dragging or damaged.

Technician, Emil, was prompt and efficient to identify and fix the issues with our garage door. Rest assured that I won’t hesitate to call these folks if repair is needed.MeMee · Google review
Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina · Google review
"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela · Google review
Emil is delightful, knowledgeable, professional, and capable. He promised to make the process easy and he did. From our first contact Thursday mid-day through completion of the project Saturday at Noon, everything was 100% perfect, and we are extremely happy. We are amazed when we look outside and see our beautiful new door, so soon after searching on google. Emil and his company deserve 100 stars but we are limited to only 5Dawn · Google review
It went very well, with the job being completed in three days. We waited few months for the supply chain to kick in ( Covid related delays ) and finally deliver the products. It was so worth the wait. Great installers, Emil and his team are professional and friendly, too, and patient in answering questions.Rachel · Google review
We interviewed several popular companies and we found that their quality, price, and level of professionalism is unmatched!Cory · Google review

Permits, HOAs and emergency access in Monrovia
City permits. Monrovia's Building and Safety is part of Community Development at 415 S. Ivy Avenue, (626) 932-5581, building@monroviaca.gov, with more on monroviaca.gov. The pages we could read do not say whether a gate, a gate operator or its wiring needs a permit, so we could not confirm a gate-specific rule. Ask the Building Division before a new gate or new electrical work.
Fire service. Monrovia has its own Fire Department, (626) 256-8181. The state's 2025 map places about a third of the city, mostly near the mountains, in the Very High fire hazard zone, so check your address and ask about access requirements before you change a locked entry.
Emergency access. Fire and police need a way in. Before you install or change a locked entry, ask the local fire department about key switches and Knox boxes.
HOA review. Many associations review exterior changes such as gates. Check yours before you change a gate's design or color.
UL 325. This safety standard covers automatic gate operators and calls for entrapment protection such as photo eyes or safety edges. We test them before we leave.

Monrovia gate repair: questions we hear
Is there gate repair near me in Monrovia?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs swing and sliding driveway gates in Monrovia (ZIP 91016) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (213) 340-4232, tell us your street or neighborhood, the gate type and what it does, and we book the soonest visit. See gate repair near me.
Is there electric gate repair near me in Monrovia?
Yes. Electric gate repair near me in Monrovia means a technician who repairs the operator, control board, sensors, remotes and backup battery as well as the gate itself. Call (213) 340-4232 and we book the soonest visit. See electric gate repair.
What is the difference between gate repair and electric gate repair in Monrovia?
Gate repair means the gate itself: hinges, posts, latches, wheels, tracks and frames. Electric gate repair means the parts that move it: the operator, control board, sensors, remotes, keypads and battery. Most service calls need both checked, so we start with the gate and then test the electronics. See gate repair.
Why does my electric gate hum but not open?
The gate is probably binding, or a gear, arm or capacitor has failed. Do not keep running it, because that can burn out the motor. Call us and we free the gate and test the operator.
How much does gate repair cost in Monrovia?
It depends on the gate type and the failed part. A remote, battery or sensor costs far less than a control board, an operator or a rebuilt post. We find the fault first, quote the price and start work only after you agree.
My gate does not work during a power outage. What can I do?
Most operators have a manual release, and many can use a backup battery. Use the release as the manufacturer directs and call us. We test the battery and the control board, because a flat battery or a board that lost its settings after an outage is common.
Should electric gates be serviced?
Yes. A yearly check of the battery, sensors, hinges or track, and operator keeps a gate from failing at a bad time.
Can you repair a gate operator from any brand?
We repair most residential operators. Tell us the brand and model, or send a photo of the unit. If parts are no longer made we explain your options.
Which ZIP code do you serve in Monrovia?
Monrovia's street ZIP code is 91016. ZIP 91017 is for PO boxes only. Mayflower Village and North El Monte touch the city but are not Monrovia, so call us with your address if you are not sure we reach you.
Does wind or a power shutoff affect gates in Monrovia?
Wind has knocked out power across Monrovia before, and Southern California Edison warned of possible shutoffs in north Monrovia in January 2025. A healthy backup battery lets the gate keep working, and a manual release lets you open it by hand. We test both.
Do I need approval to change a gate in a Monrovia historic district?
The city's zoning code asks for a certificate of appropriateness before alterations at a landmark or in a historic district, such as the Wildrose Tract. The pages we read do not mention gates, so ask the city's Planning staff before you change a street-facing entry.
Can a handyman fix a gate?
A handyman can handle a loose latch or a dead remote battery. A failed operator, a control board or a gate that has dropped off its hinges needs a technician who can test the controls and the safety devices.
Do you repair garage doors in Monrovia too?
Yes. See garage door repair in Monrovia for springs, cables, openers and new doors, and garage door repair near me. When you ask for both we can look at the gate and the garage door at the same address.
