What customers say

My garage door spring broke the other evening and I was unable to open my door. I contacted them first thing the next day. They were able to give me an appointment for later in that day. The service technician called prior to arrival as promised & arrived shortly afterwards. He recommended some additional service to the door in addition to the springs which I accepted. The door was repaired in less than 2 hours & now works better than ever. Thank youBrandi · Google review
Great to work with, gave us good advise and very knowledgeable with garage door springs . We could not find anyone to do our repair ASAP as it was a small project, but that did not matter to them. They traveled 2 hours to get the work done. Tech who did our repair was very personable, fast and did an excellent job.Theresa · Google review
I was really happy with the work Emil did for me. He was a responsive communicator, arrived on time, and did a quality job on the repair I needed. I would hire him again without hesitation.Serenity · Google review
Technician, Emil, was prompt and efficient to identify and fix the issues with our garage door. Rest assured that I won’t hesitate to call these folks if repair is needed.MeMee · Google review
Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina · Google review
"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela · Google review

Tract homes from the 1960s and a large renter share
West Covina is a Los Angeles County city of more than 100,000 people. According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey, the median home was built in 1967, about 64 percent of housing units are single-family detached houses, about 60 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied and about 22 percent of units are in buildings of five or more units.
Gate hardware, operators and wiring on properties of that age have had years of use, and about four in ten homes are rented, so a repair can involve a landlord or an association. Real-estate listings describe Aspen Village and Pacific Park West as gated, but we could not find an official list of West Covina's HOAs, so check your own association's rules.
Whether it is a driveway gate on a tract home or a shared entry, we start with the gate itself, then test the operator, sensors, keypad and battery backup.
- Gates on 1960s tract homes and later upgrades
- Shared entries at condos, apartments and rentals
- HOA-managed entries with keypads and remotes

Why gates in West Covina stop working
These are the faults we hear about most. The real cause is confirmed on site.
| Symptom | Common cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Gate stuck open or stuck closed | A failed operator, a locked manual release or a power fault | Use the manual release as the maker directs, then diagnose the operator |
| Gate reverses without touching anything | Dirty photo eyes, a bent bracket or a force setting that is too low | Clean and realign the photo eyes and reset the force |
| Gate swings or slides unevenly | A leaf out of level, worn hinges or a loose track | Level the leaf, replace hinges, tighten the track |
| Clicking sound but no movement | A weak battery or a failed starting capacitor | Test the battery and the capacitor and replace the weak one |
| Solar gate stops after a few cycles | A weak panel, an old battery or shade on the panel | Test the panel and the battery, clean or move the panel |
| Remote or keypad gives no response | Dead batteries, a lost code or a receiver fault | Replace batteries, reprogram the code, test the receiver |
Do not run an operator against a gate that is jammed or dragging.

What West Covina conditions do to a gate
Wikipedia describes West Covina's climate as hot-summer Mediterranean, with summer averages above 73 degrees. Sun and heat age batteries, plastic housings and lubricants, and dry summers leave dust on sensor lenses.
The USGS felt-report list for the July 29, 2008 Chino Hills earthquake includes West Covina, and the 1987 Whittier Narrows earthquake shook the east Los Angeles area. Strong shaking can shift posts and misalign a track or hinge, so a gate should be checked after one.
Twice a year, wipe sensor lenses, lubricate hinges and rollers, test the backup battery and check that the gate still sits square on its posts or track.
- Wipe sensor lenses and clear the track
- Replace backup batteries before summer
- Check alignment after strong shaking

| Cantilever sliding gate | Guide rollers and carriage wheels | Realign the carriage and replace the rollers |

Permits, HOAs and emergency access in West Covina
City permits. West Covina's Building Division is at City Hall, 1444 West Garvey Avenue South, phone (626) 939-8425, email Building@westcovina.org, and permit applications go through an online portal linked from westcovina.gov. The city FAQ says only the property owner or a contractor can pull a permit and that most work on a home requires one, but it does not name gates or gate operators, so we could not confirm a gate-specific rule.
Fire service and hazard map. West Covina has its own Fire Department and has posted a State Fire Marshal fire hazard map dated March 24, 2025. We could not confirm which homes, if any, sit in a Very High zone, so ask the city if yours is a hillside lot.
Fire department access. A locked gate can slow emergency crews. Ask the local fire department what it requires, for example a key switch or Knox box, before you install or change an entry.
Design rules. Planned communities and HOAs can limit gate style, height and color. Ask first, and we can give you a written scope for their review.
Entrapment protection. The UL 325 standard covers automatic gate operators and calls for devices such as photo eyes or contact edges. We test these devices every time we repair an operator.

West Covina gate repair: questions we hear
Is there gate repair near me in West Covina?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs swing and sliding driveway gates in West Covina (ZIP codes 91790, 91791 and 91792) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (213) 340-4232, tell us your street or neighborhood, the gate type and what it does, and we book the soonest visit. See gate repair near me.
Is there electric gate repair near me in West Covina?
Yes. Electric gate repair near me in West Covina means a technician who repairs the operator, control board, sensors, remotes and backup battery as well as the gate itself. Call (213) 340-4232 and we book the soonest visit. See electric gate repair.
What is the difference between gate repair and electric gate repair in West Covina?
Gate repair means the gate itself: hinges, posts, latches, wheels, tracks and frames. Electric gate repair means the parts that move it: the operator, control board, sensors, remotes, keypads and battery. Most service calls need both checked, so we start with the gate and then test the electronics. See gate repair.
Why does my electric gate hum but not open?
Hum without movement points to a binding gate or a failed capacitor, gear or arm. Keep the operator off, and we free the gate and test the parts.
How much does gate repair cost in West Covina?
A sensor, remote or hinge costs far less than an operator or a rebuilt post. We quote after we see the problem and before we start, so you know the price first.
My gate does not work during a power outage. What can I do?
Most operators have a manual release, and many can use a backup battery. Use the release as the manufacturer directs and call us. We test the battery and the control board, because a flat battery or a board that lost its settings after an outage is common.
Should electric gates be serviced?
Yes. A yearly check of the battery, sensors, hinges or track, and operator keeps a gate from failing at a bad time.
Can you repair a gate operator from any brand?
We repair most residential operators. Tell us the brand and model, or send a photo of the unit. If parts are no longer made we explain your options.
Which ZIP codes do you serve in West Covina?
West Covina uses ZIP codes 91790, 91791 and 91792. ZIP 91793 is for PO boxes only. Call us with your address if you are not sure we reach you.
Do hillside lots in West Covina have special gate rules?
West Covina's zoning code includes a hillside overlay, mapped as H, aimed at new hillside development. A code mirror website, not the city's own site, says structures cannot overhang slopes and a 25-foot setback from the slope applies unless the building and fire departments waive it. It does not address gates or driveways, so ask the Building Division at (626) 939-8425 about your lot.
Can a handyman fix a gate?
A handyman can handle a loose latch or a dead remote battery. A failed operator, a control board or a gate that has dropped off its hinges needs a technician who can test the controls and the safety devices.
Does West Covina require a permit for a gate operator?
The city FAQ says most work on a home needs a permit and lists re-roofing, windows, patios and electrical service upgrades, but it does not mention gates or gate operators. Call the Building Division at (626) 939-8425 before a new gate or new electrical work.
Do you repair garage doors in West Covina too?
Yes. See garage door repair in West Covina for springs, cables, openers and new doors, and garage door repair near me. When you ask for both we can look at the gate and the garage door at the same address.
