Lockport areas we serve
Areas are described by the districts and landmarks named by Wikipedia and a real-estate marketing site. Call if yours is not listed.
| Part of Lockport | What is there | What we often see on garage doors |
|---|---|---|
| Canal and downtown area | The Lockport Historic District, with the Gaylord Building (1838) and Lincoln Landing, according to Wikipedia | Older doors and openers, often replaced once or twice |
| Streets around Lockport Township High School | The East and Central campuses of the high school and the streets near them | Mixed ages; 2000s homes are the largest group citywide |
| North, east and south subdivisions | Creekside Estates, Parkside Estates and others, mostly built in the 1990s and early 2000s, according to a real-estate marketing site | Original openers now 20 to 30 years old |
Lockport's main ZIP code is 60441.

An old canal town with a large newer edge
According to the Census Bureau's American Community Survey for 2020-2024, Lockport has about 10,212 housing units with a median year built of 1998. About 37 percent were built from 2000 to 2009 and about 18 percent in the 1990s, so about 55 percent of homes date from 1990 to 2009, but about 12 percent date from 1939 or earlier. Doors in the old canal-town streets are often well past their first set of parts, while the 1990s and 2000s doors are at spring and opener age.
About 66 percent of the city's homes are single-family detached houses and about 19 percent are attached, such as townhomes, and about 85 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied. Wikipedia says the city grew along the Illinois and Michigan Canal and that the Gaylord Building, a former warehouse, was built of local limestone in 1838. A real-estate marketing site names Creekside Estates and Parkside Estates among the newer subdivisions. We could not verify whether any area is association-governed, so ask your association, if you have one, before you change a door.
Tell us your cross street and whether the door is a single, a double or a pair, and we book the soonest visit. We weigh and balance each door before choosing new springs.

What Lockport weather does to a garage door
Lockport has no station table of its own, so we use the Joliet Brandon Road Dam station, about 5 miles south-west of the city center. Its 1991-2020 normals give a January average high of 31.1 degrees and a low of 16.6, a July high of 83.6 and about 38 inches of precipitation a year. Cold stiffens grease and weatherstripping, loads the opener and can break a spring that has many cycles on it.
Chicago fell to minus 23 degrees in the January 2019 polar vortex, according to the National Weather Service. The August 10, 2020 derecho covered Kendall and Will counties, and ComEd said at one point that more than 800,000 customers lost power across its territory, according to news reports. We could not verify Lockport-only damage or outage figures. In a long outage, know where your manual release is.
Twice a year, wipe the tracks, lubricate the rollers and hinges, and test the safety reverse. Before a hard freeze, clear ice from the bottom seal so the door does not freeze to the slab.
- Clear ice from the bottom seal in winter
- Lubricate rollers and hinges twice a year

Real reviews from our Google listing, copied as the customers wrote them.
Great to work with, gave us good advise and very knowledgeable with garage door springs . We could not find anyone to do our repair ASAP as it was a small project, but that did not matter to them. They traveled 2 hours to get the work done. Tech who did our repair was very personable, fast and did an excellent job.Theresa · Google review
I was really happy with the work Emil did for me. He was a responsive communicator, arrived on time, and did a quality job on the repair I needed. I would hire him again without hesitation.Serenity · Google review
Technician, Emil, was prompt and efficient to identify and fix the issues with our garage door. Rest assured that I won’t hesitate to call these folks if repair is needed.MeMee · Google review
Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina · Google review
"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela · Google review
Emil is delightful, knowledgeable, professional, and capable. He promised to make the process easy and he did. From our first contact Thursday mid-day through completion of the project Saturday at Noon, everything was 100% perfect, and we are extremely happy. We are amazed when we look outside and see our beautiful new door, so soon after searching on google. Emil and his company deserve 100 stars but we are limited to only 5Dawn · Google review

Opener safety. The federal standard for residential garage door operators (Consumer Product Safety Commission, 16 CFR part 1211) calls for automatic reversing and entrapment protection such as photo-eye sensors. If yours stopped working, we test the reverse and the sensors and repair or replace what failed. See opener installation.
Design rules. Planned communities and historic districts can limit door style and color. Ask before you choose a new door: new garage doors.
City permits. Lockport is a city with its own government. Its Building Department is at 222 E. 9th Street, 2nd Floor, phone 815-838-0549, option 5, and building@lockport.org, and the city says permit applications are accepted in person or by email. A third-party permit guide lists construction, addition, alteration, demolition, fences, pools, driveways and decks as permit triggers and does not mention garage doors, so we could not confirm whether a garage door replacement or an opener swap needs a permit. Ask the department before the work. The city's page links a contractor registration section we could not read, and the guide says contractors must register with the city, so ask what applies.
State rules. The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation's list of regulated professions has a roofing contractor category but no garage door, overhead door or general contractor category, so we found no state garage door contractor license. The Illinois Attorney General's home repair page says contractors should give you the Home Repair Consumer Rights document on jobs valued at $1,000 or more and describes a written contract that names the contractor and lists the work, dates, total cost and payment schedule. It also gives you 3 business days to cancel a contract you signed at home (15 business days if you are 65 or older).

Lockport garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Lockport?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Lockport (ZIP 60441) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (312) 620-1952, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Lockport?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Lockport?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP codes do you serve in Lockport?
Lockport's main ZIP code is 60441, and a ZIP lookup site also lists 60446 and 60491, which are the Romeoville and Homer Glen ZIP codes that reach the edges of the city. We could not confirm which ZIP covers which street, so call us if your address is near Romeoville, Crest Hill or Homer Glen and you are not sure we reach it.
Do you service older homes near the canal in Lockport?
Yes. Lockport grew along the Illinois and Michigan Canal, and Census estimates show about 12 percent of its homes date from 1939 or earlier. Tell us what you have and we measure the opening before we quote.
Do you repair garage doors after a storm in Lockport?
Yes. Strong wind can bend tracks or push a door out of its frame, and a falling branch can dent panels. We inspect the track, panels, springs and opener, explain what we find and quote the price before we start.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can handle a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so we do not recommend fixing them yourself.
How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?
Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
