Damp winters, cool foggy mornings and a hot, dry summer

What McMinnville weather does to a garage door

NOAA's McMinnville airport station, about 5 km east-southeast of downtown, shows 1991-2020 normals with a July high near 83 degrees, a January low near 35, about 47 nights a year at or below 32, and about 38 inches of precipitation a year, with November through January the wettest months. Wikipedia describes cool, foggy marine-layer mornings. Damp air rusts springs, cables, tracks and hinges and wears bottom seals.

Wikipedia gives McMinnville a record high of 114 degrees, most recently on June 28, 2021, and a record low of minus 7 on January 31, 1950. The governor said more than 330,000 Oregonians lost power in the February 2021 ice storm, mostly in the Willamette Valley, but we could not confirm a McMinnville outage count. When the power fails, the opener will not lift the door, so know where your red manual-release cord is.

Before winter, wipe the tracks, lubricate the rollers and hinges, and test the safety reverse. After a freeze or a hot spell, check the bottom seal and watch how smoothly the door runs.

  • Know where the manual release is
  • Lubricate rollers and hinges twice a year
  • Check the bottom seal after a freeze

"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela · Google review

Emil is delightful, knowledgeable, professional, and capable. He promised to make the process easy and he did. From our first contact Thursday mid-day through completion of the project Saturday at Noon, everything was 100% perfect, and we are extremely happy. We are amazed when we look outside and see our beautiful new door, so soon after searching on google. Emil and his company deserve 100 stars but we are limited to only 5Dawn · Google review

It went very well, with the job being completed in three days. We waited few months for the supply chain to kick in ( Covid related delays ) and finally deliver the products. It was so worth the wait. Great installers, Emil and his team are professional and friendly, too, and patient in answering questions.Rachel · Google review

Rules to know

Opener safety, permits and design rules in McMinnville

Opener safety. The federal standard for residential garage door operators (Consumer Product Safety Commission, 16 CFR part 1211) calls for automatic reversing and entrapment protection such as photo-eye sensors. If yours stopped working, we test the reverse and the sensors and repair or replace what failed. See opener installation.

Design rules. Planned communities and historic districts can limit door style and color. Ask before you choose a new door: new garage doors.

City permits. McMinnville is its own city. The Building Division is in the Community Development Center at 231 NE 5th Street, phone (503) 434-7314, and the page encourages questions about permit requirements before you apply. It says Yamhill County administers electrical permits and inspections inside the city, at 503-434-7516. The page does not mention garage doors, door replacements or openers, so we could not confirm whether a garage door replacement or an opener swap needs a permit. Ask the Building Division before you order. See mcminnvilleoregon.gov.

State rules. Oregon law (ORS 455.310) says repairs and maintenance on a single-family home and its private garage should not need permits or fees, and the state's exempt list includes door and window replacements, as long as the work does not violate the intent of the structural and fire and life safety rules. Oregon's Construction Contractors Board says a license is required for any construction business that advertises, offers or bids construction, remodeling or repair work. We could not confirm which license class covers garage door work. You can check any contractor's license at search.ccb.state.or.us or call the board at 503-378-4621.

FAQ

McMinnville garage door repair: questions we hear

Is there garage door repair near me in McMinnville?

Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in McMinnville (ZIP 97128) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (503) 974-8815, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.

What is the average price to repair a garage door in McMinnville?

Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.

What is the most common garage door repair in McMinnville?

Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.

How much is a service call for a garage door?

Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?

A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.

Which ZIP code do you serve in McMinnville, Oregon?

McMinnville's ZIP code is 97128. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.

Do I need a permit to replace a garage door in McMinnville?

The Building Division's page does not mention garage doors, so we could not confirm it. Call the Building Division at (503) 434-7314 before you order, and ask Yamhill County about the electrical permit if an opener needs new wiring.

Do you also come out to Lafayette, Dayton and Carlton?

Yes. Tell us your address when you call and we confirm that we reach it and book the soonest visit.

Can a handyman fix a garage door?

A handyman can handle a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so we do not recommend fixing them yourself.

How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?

Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
