Homes from the 1970s through the 2000s around a college town
According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey, Newberg has about 10,200 housing units. About 59 percent are single-family detached houses, about 7 percent are attached and about 20 percent are in buildings of five or more units. The median year built is 1991, about one home in three dates from 1990 to 2009 and about one in six from the 1970s, so original doors and openers are often 20 to 40 years old.
George Fox University sits in the middle of the city, and Springbrook, once its own community, is now part of Newberg, according to Wikipedia. The Hoover-Minthorn House Museum, where Herbert Hoover lived as a boy, is on South River Street. We could not verify any homeowner association or historic review rules that apply to garage doors here, so ask your association or the city before you change a door.
Tell us your cross street and whether the door is a single, a double or a pair, and we book the soonest visit. We weigh and balance each door before choosing new springs.

What customers say
Real reviews from our Google listing, copied as the customers wrote them.
Great to work with, gave us good advise and very knowledgeable with garage door springs . We could not find anyone to do our repair ASAP as it was a small project, but that did not matter to them. They traveled 2 hours to get the work done. Tech who did our repair was very personable, fast and did an excellent job.Theresa · Google review
I was really happy with the work Emil did for me. He was a responsive communicator, arrived on time, and did a quality job on the repair I needed. I would hire him again without hesitation.Serenity · Google review
Technician, Emil, was prompt and efficient to identify and fix the issues with our garage door. Rest assured that I won’t hesitate to call these folks if repair is needed.MeMee · Google review
Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina · Google review
"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela · Google review
Emil is delightful, knowledgeable, professional, and capable. He promised to make the process easy and he did. From our first contact Thursday mid-day through completion of the project Saturday at Noon, everything was 100% perfect, and we are extremely happy. We are amazed when we look outside and see our beautiful new door, so soon after searching on google. Emil and his company deserve 100 stars but we are limited to only 5Dawn · Google review

What Newberg weather does to a garage door
Newberg has no NOAA normals station of its own, so we use the nearest ones, the McMinnville and Aurora airports about 16 to 18 km away. From NOAA's 1991-2020 normals they show roughly 38 to 40 inches of precipitation a year, with 5 to 6.5 inches a month in the wettest winter months and under half an inch in July and August. Between about 39 and 47 nights a year fall to 32 degrees or lower, and July highs are near 83. Long damp seasons rust springs, cables and hinges and wear bottom seals.
The February 2021 ice storm left more than 350,000 residents without power at the peak, according to OPB; that report covers the Portland area, not Newberg alone. The June 2021 heat dome pushed Portland to 116 degrees, according to Wikipedia. We found no Newberg-specific outage or smoke records. When the power fails the opener will not lift the door, so know where your manual release is.
Before winter, wipe the tracks, lubricate the rollers and hinges, check the bottom seal for gaps and test the safety reverse. After an ice or wind storm, look at the tracks before you run the opener.
- Check bottom seals before the wet season
- Lubricate rollers and hinges twice a year
- Know where the manual release is

Opener safety, permits and design rules in Newberg
Opener safety. Federal rules (the Consumer Product Safety Commission's standard for automatic residential garage door operators, 16 CFR part 1211) require openers made for homes to reverse the door when it meets an obstruction and to have a separate entrapment protection device, which on most openers is the pair of photo-eye sensors near the floor. If your opener ignores the sensors or does not reverse, stop using it and call us. See opener installation.
HOAs and style rules. If you live in a planned community or a historic district, check style and color rules before you choose a new door. See new garage doors for styles.
City permits. Newberg is its own city, so its rules come from the City of Newberg. The Building Division is at City Hall, 414 E. First Street, phone 503-537-1240, and permits are submitted online through the city's OpenGov portal. The city's Building pages describe plan review and same-day permits but do not name garage doors, door replacement or openers, so we could not confirm whether a garage door replacement needs a permit. Ask the Building Division before the work. The city does not issue electrical permits; Yamhill County does, at 525 NE 4th Street in McMinnville, phone 503-434-7516. See newbergoregon.gov.
State rules. Oregon law (ORS 455.310) says upkeep on a single-family home and its private garage should not need permits or fees if it does not conflict with structural and fire and life-safety provisions, and the state's exempt list includes door and window replacements. Oregon also requires a Construction Contractors Board license for most repair and alteration work done for pay on residential property. We could not confirm which license class covers garage door work. You can check any contractor's license and bond at search.ccb.state.or.us or call the board at 503-378-4621.

Newberg garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Newberg?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Newberg (ZIP 97132) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (503) 974-8815, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Newberg?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Newberg?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP code do you serve in Newberg?
Newberg uses ZIP code 97132. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address, for example on the edge of the city toward Dundee.
Do I need a permit to replace a garage door in Newberg?
We could not confirm that. The city's building pages do not mention garage doors, so call the Building Division at 503-537-1240 before you order. Changing the header or the size of the opening is a structural change.
Do you service garage doors in Dundee, Dayton and St. Paul?
Yes. These towns are a short drive from Newberg. Tell us the town and your cross street when you call so we can plan the visit.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can handle a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so we do not recommend fixing them yourself.
How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?
Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
