Great company to use for garage door work. Came out promptly, over a weekend when I could not get others to respond. Efficient work, very knowledgeable, very friendly. I would not hesitate to contact them first the next time I need service.Courtney · Google review
Incredible honest work. Emil took care of all the repairs needed in order for my garage door to work again. I know I need a new garage door but I can't afford it right now this company was nice enough to fix it instead of hounding me for more money to get a new door. Emil was so nice that he even provided me a price. I was so happy he said I could call him when I had the money and he would honor me the price. amazing company to reach out to.Jasmine · Google review
Came out same day I place the request & was very professional and helpful. I’m pleased how quickly he got the job done and the garage door is working great now.Shawntae · Google review
I have been using them for few years. They are professional, reliable (especially in emergencies (springs breaking)), customer service is always polite and helpful, and their prices cannot be beat!!Deborah · Google review
Doesn't get any better than this guy! I have recently purchased a condo with a broken garage door opener. It was missing some brackets. I called them, and Emil came out promptly the next morning. On time! He was able to run back to his shop and get the bracket I needed. It took him less than an hour to complete the entire project! My garage door works great now. I said a little thank you to Emil as I opened my garage door late last night and drove in my garage. I would definitely call him again if I needed anything done with my garage door. Highly recommend, plus he's just a super nice guy, which the process so much easier. Thanks Emil!Winston · Google review

A river town with homes from about 1964
According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey, The Dalles has about 7,000 housing units and a median year built of 1964. About 65 percent are single-family detached houses, about 9 percent are in buildings of two to four units, about 13 percent are in buildings of five or more units, about 8 percent are mobile homes, and 63.2 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied. A door that has opened a few times a day since the 1960s is often on its second or third set of springs.
Wikipedia calls The Dalles the Wasco County seat, about 75 miles east of Portland inside the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, and its list of nearby places includes the Commercial Historic District and Trevitt's Addition Historic District, both on the National Register. We could not verify building materials, door types or named homeowner associations, so tell us what your door looks like when you call.

What your garage door is telling you in The Dalles
A starting point. We confirm the cause on site.
| The door does this | Common cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Slams down or will not lift | A broken torsion spring | Replace the spring set, balance the door, test the safety reverse |
| Opener hums but the door stays put | A broken spring or a disconnected trolley | Find which one failed, then repair and rebalance |
| One side hangs lower than the other | A slipped or snapped lift cable | Replace the cable, check the drum and level the door |
| Loud grinding or rattling | Dry or worn rollers, loose hinges | Replace rollers and hinges, lubricate and tighten |
| Reverses before it reaches the floor | Misaligned or dirty safety sensors | Clean and realign the sensors, test the reverse |
Do not run a door that is crooked or heavy.

What The Dalles weather does to a garage door
Wikipedia's climate table, which uses the Columbia Gorge Regional Airport station across the river in Washington, shows 1991-2020 normals with a July high near 88 degrees, a January low near 31 and about 13.7 inches of precipitation a year. Wikipedia calls the climate semiarid and says autumn day-to-night swings can top 36 degrees. Big swings like that make springs, lubricant and weatherstripping expand and contract all year.
Wikipedia says spring is the windiest season, with a powerful west wind on most afternoons, and that snow falls nearly every winter, about 4.8 inches a year by its table. A strong gust pushes on a wide door, so loose tracks and worn hinges show up first. In February 2021 the National Weather Service warned of ice and snow in the Gorge and Interstate 84 closed; if the power fails, the opener will not lift the door, so know where your red manual-release cord is.
Each spring, wipe the tracks, lubricate the rollers and hinges, and look at the weatherstripping. After a windy week, watch how smoothly the door runs and call us if it shakes or stalls.
- Know where the manual release is
- Check the tracks after windy weeks
- Lubricate rollers and hinges twice a year

Opener safety, permits and design rules in The Dalles
Opener safety. The federal standard for residential garage door operators (Consumer Product Safety Commission, 16 CFR part 1211) calls for automatic reversing and entrapment protection such as photo-eye sensors. If yours stopped working, we test the reverse and the sensors and repair or replace what failed. See opener installation.
Design rules. Planned communities and historic districts can limit door style and color. Ask before you choose a new door: new garage doors.
City permits. The Dalles is its own city. Community Development | Planning is at 313 Court Street, phone 541-296-5481, email CDD@thedalles.gov, and its page links to Wasco County Building Codes. The page does not discuss building permits. A summary of the city code that we could only read as a search snippet says the state handles building-code review and the city requires its own permits for new construction, exterior structural changes, demolitions and changes of use. We could not confirm whether a garage door replacement or an opener swap needs a permit, so ask Community Development before you order. See thedalles.gov. A 2014 city commission record shows its Historic Landmarks Commission reviewing window replacements, so ask first if your home is a landmark or in a historic district.
State rules. Oregon law (ORS 455.310) says repairs and maintenance on a single-family home and its private garage should not need permits or fees, and the state's exempt list includes door and window replacements. Oregon's Construction Contractors Board says a license is needed for any construction business that advertises, offers or bids construction, remodeling or repair work. We could not confirm which license class covers garage door work. You can look up any contractor at search.ccb.state.or.us or call the board at 503-378-4621.

The Dalles garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in The Dalles?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in The Dalles (ZIP 97058) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (503) 974-8815, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in The Dalles?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in The Dalles?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP code do you serve in The Dalles?
The Dalles has one street ZIP code, 97058. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.
Do I need a permit to replace a garage door in The Dalles?
We could not confirm that. Oregon's building-code chapter lists door and window replacements among the exempt work, but the city also has its own permits for structural changes. Call Community Development at 541-296-5481 before you order.
Do you also come out to Dufur and Mosier?
We serve The Dalles and nearby communities such as Chenoweth, Rowena, Mosier and Dufur. Tell us your address when you call and we confirm that we reach it and book the soonest visit.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can handle a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so we do not recommend fixing them yourself.
How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?
Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
