Garage Door Opens by Itself: Causes and Fixes

By Emil Garage Doors · Published November 2, 2026 · 4 min read · Openers and remotes

Short answer

A garage door that opens or moves on its own usually has one of three causes: a stuck button on a remote, a neighbor's remote paired to your opener by mistake, or a shorted wall control. Chamberlain says to find a stuck remote first, then clear the opener's memory and reprogram your remotes. A technician can test the wall control and the logic board.

The three usual causes

Check for a stuck remote

1

Look at the Learn LED

Find the LED beside the Learn button on the motor unit. If it flashes rapidly and continuously, a remote is sending a constant signal.

2

Pull the batteries

Remove the battery from each remote in turn, including the ones in cars and bags. When the opener's LED stops flashing, you have found the stuck button.

3

Replace the remote

A worn remote can keep a button down. Replace it or its case, then reprogram it. See how to program a garage door remote.

If it happens when a neighbor leaves

If the timing matches a neighbor's comings and goings, their remote may have been paired to your opener, or the codes may be crossed. Chamberlain's fix is to erase the opener's memory by holding the Learn button for 6 seconds, then reprogram your own remotes and keypads. That erases every remote, so have them all in hand before you start.

Other senders to rule out

A phone app, a smart-home routine or a voice assistant can also send an open command. Check that nothing is set up to do it before you suspect the opener.

When the wall control is the cause

Chamberlain's test is to disconnect the wall control wires at the motor unit and see whether the problem returns. That means working on the opener head, so we suggest leaving it to a technician. They can tell a bad control, a damaged wire and a failing logic board apart without replacing parts at random. For related problems, see why an opener keeps reversing.

Why it matters

An open door is an open house

A door that moves unexpectedly leaves your home open and can close on a car or a person. Chamberlain suggests unplugging the opener when you leave while you test. Close and lock the entry door, and make sure the door reverses on contact. See garage door safety tests. Do not touch the springs or cables.

Questions people ask

Why does my garage door go up and down on its own?

A stuck remote button, a neighbor's remote paired by mistake, a shorted wall control or a failing logic board can all do this. Check the remotes first.

Why does my garage door reverse as soon as it hits the floor?

That usually means the opener thinks something is in the way. Common causes are misaligned or blocked sensors, a binding or unbalanced door, or travel and force limits set wrong. Check the sensors first, and see our opener-reversing post.

Can a neighbor's remote open my garage door?

Yes, if it was paired to your opener by mistake. Chamberlain's fix is to hold the Learn button for 6 seconds to erase the memory and then reprogram your own remotes.

Should I unplug the opener until it is fixed?

Chamberlain suggests unplugging the opener whenever you leave while you test for the cause. Lock the entry door and use the manual release if you need to open the door.
