With us, a full-view aluminum and glass door costs $2,500 to $4,500 in a 9x7 size and $4,500 to $9,000 in a 16x7 size. Insulated glass adds $400 to $1,200 and a custom color adds $300 to $1,200. The glass type, frame finish and door size set the price, and we confirm it after we see the opening.
What a glass garage door costs
A full-view door has an aluminum frame around large glass panels. These are our typical prices, shown as ranges because every opening, glass choice and finish is different. The final price is confirmed after we see the door opening and before we order.

What changes the price
- Door size. A 16x7 door has more glass, more frame and more weight than a 9x7. Clopay notes that doors wider than 14 feet include a reinforcing fin, which is one reason very wide doors cost more.
- Glass type. Clear, frosted, tinted, mirrored and white laminate glass are all offered on some full-view lines. Clopay says specialty glass is limited to certain models.
- Insulated glass. Insulated panels are available, and Clopay says some specialty glass is not offered with insulation. That is the $400 to $1,200 upgrade line above.
- Frame finish. Anodized, painted and powder-coated frames are common, and a custom color costs more and can take longer.
- Special orders. A custom size adds 20% to 40% to the price. Lead time is 4 to 8 weeks.
Clear glass or frosted glass?
Clear glass
- Lets in the most daylight
- Shows what is in the garage
- Suits a tidy garage or a showroom look
Frosted or tinted glass
- Clopay says frosted and white laminate glass give privacy and still let light in
- Hides shelves and cars from view
- Gives you control over how much shows
Privacy is the most common reason a homeowner picks frosted glass over clear. A solid aluminum panel gives the most privacy, and the manufacturer notes it as an option on its lines. For more on light, heat and privacy, see full-view glass doors: privacy and heat.
Do glass doors keep the garage cooler?
Not by default. A glass door lets in light, and light carries heat. Insulated glass helps, and Clopay lists one line with polyurethane-insulated rails and stiles at an R-value of 3.8. Treat that as one model's figure, not a promise for every glass door.
Ask for the manufacturer's spec sheet for the exact door and glass you are quoted. If keeping the garage cool or warm matters more than light, an insulated steel door may suit you better. See new garage doors for the full range.
A new door usually means a new opener
A glass door still needs an opener sized for its weight. In California, a replacement residential door cannot be connected to an older opener that lacks a battery backup. Plan for that on the same quote. Our belt-drive opener with battery backup, installed, is $550 to $900. See California battery backup law.

What a glass door quote should list
- Door size and the frame finish and color
- Glass type for every panel, and whether it is insulated
- Whether the price includes the opener, springs, tracks and hardware
- Installation, haul-away of the old door and any wall or trim work
- Lead time and the total price before work starts
Two glass door quotes can differ by thousands of dollars because one lists insulated glass and a custom color and the other does not. Ask each company to name the glass and finish line by line.

Questions people ask
How much do glass garage doors cost?
With us, a full-view aluminum and glass door is $2,500 to $4,500 in a 9x7 size and $4,500 to $9,000 in a 16x7 size. Insulated glass adds $400 to $1,200, and the final price is confirmed after we see the opening.
Are glass garage doors safe?
Clopay says all of its full-view glass, except some specialty types, is tempered for safety. Ask the quote to name the glass type on every panel.
Can I get privacy with a glass garage door?
Yes. Frosted and white laminate glass give privacy and still let light in, and a solid aluminum panel gives the most privacy.
Does a glass garage door need a special opener?
It needs an opener that suits its size and weight. In California a replacement door also has to connect to an opener with a battery backup, so many door quotes include a new opener.
