Garage door estimates differ because the quotes rarely cover the same job. Spring size and cycle rating, cable and roller replacement, door weight, opener type, labor and what is left out all change the total. To compare fairly, ask each company to list the parts, the work and the final price in writing.
Quick answers
Why are garage door estimates so different?
The quotes usually cover different jobs. Spring size and cycle rating, cables, rollers, door weight, opener work and labor all change the total, so compare the parts and tasks before the prices.
What should a garage door quote include?
The parts with sizes and ratings, the labor, whether both springs are replaced, a safety test, any extras, and the total price in writing before work starts.
How do I check a garage door contractor's license?
Use the Contractors State License Board lookup, which lets you search by license number or business name and check the license status.
Can a garage door company charge a large deposit?
In California, a home improvement downpayment is limited to the lesser of 1,000 dollars or 10 percent of the contract price under section 7159.
The full explanation
Why is one quote so different from another?
Most of the gap comes from scope, not profit. One quote may replace a single spring and leave the cables alone. Another may replace both springs, the cables and the rollers. They are different jobs with different prices, so the totals cannot be compared directly.
Our own ranges show how wide honest pricing can be. A torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450, and heavy-duty springs for a heavy, wood or oversized door are $350 to $900. The door's weight and the spring's cycle rating explain the gap.

Myth: all springs are the same
Fact: springs are matched to the door. Plano Overhead Door says a standard torsion spring is rated for 10,000 cycles, and higher-cycle springs can offer about ten times that. A cycle is one trip up and one trip down. A quote with the lower-rated spring will cost less now and may come due again sooner.
Ask for the wire size, length and cycle rating on the quote, not only the word "springs". See spring replacement cost for the full breakdown.
Myth: the lowest quote is the same job for less
Fact: a low total can hide a short list. Check whether it includes both springs, cables, rollers, a safety test and the opener work, and whether any visit fee is extra. A quote that leaves out parts you need turns into a second bill once the technician is at the door.
A phone quote also depends on what you described. Ours is confirmed after we see the door, because a stuck door might be an off-track door, a broken cable or a worn spring.
What does California require in a written contract?
For home improvement work, California's Business and Professions Code section 7159 applies when the total price is more than 500 dollars. The contract must be in writing and signed before work starts. It must state the contract price, describe the project and the significant materials and equipment to be used, and list any extra work through a signed change order.
The same section limits a downpayment to the lesser of 1,000 dollars or 10 percent of the contract price. If a company asks for much more before starting, ask why. This is a plain summary, not legal advice.
Quick facts for comparing quotes
| Ask this | Why it matters | What a clear answer sounds like |
|---|---|---|
| Are both springs replaced? | The second spring is the same age | Yes, or a clear reason one is enough |
| What is the spring cycle rating? | It sets how long the spring lasts | A number, plus wire size and length |
| Are cables, rollers and the safety test included? | Worn parts fail soon after a repair | Each one listed as included or extra |
| Is the price final? | Phone prices change at the door | A total in writing before work starts |
| Who is the contractor? | You can check a license number | A name and number you can look up |
A checklist, not a script. Not every job needs every item.
How do I compare two quotes?
- Put the two quotes side by side and list every part and every task.
- Mark the items that appear on one quote and not the other.
- Ask each company to price the missing items so both quotes cover the same job.
- Look up each contractor's license on the state board's site and confirm the written contract has the price, the materials and the payment schedule.
- Choose on the complete picture, not the headline price.
