1970s houses, townhomes and planned developments
Cypress is a built-out Orange County city that began as Dairy City in 1956 and became Cypress in 1957, according to Wikipedia. The Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey puts the median year built at 1971 and the owner-occupied share at about 68 percent. About 62 percent of housing units are single-family detached houses and about 17 percent are single-family attached homes such as townhomes.
Real-estate sites mention Cypress Village, with townhomes, patio homes and an HOA, and a real-estate blog describes the Sorrento development and Cypress Monterey as gated. We could not confirm the gating independently. Homes from the 1970s onward are now old enough that original hinges, operators and remotes often need attention, and an association may have its own rules for gates.
On a driveway gate or a shared townhome entry, we start with the gate itself and then test the operator, the sensors and the remotes.

- Shared entries at townhome developments
- Operators, remotes and keypads that have aged
Why gates in Cypress stop working
A starting point. We confirm the cause on site.
| The gate does this | Common cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Gate does nothing at all | No power, a tripped breaker or a dead battery | Check power, breaker and battery, then the control board |
| Motor hums, gate does not move | A binding gate, a worn gear or arm, or a failed capacitor | Free the gate, then repair or replace the failed part |
| Gate stops halfway or reverses | A blocked or misaligned sensor, a safety edge or a force setting | Clean and realign the sensors, test the edge, reset the force |
| Gate sags or drags on the ground | Worn hinges, a post that has shifted or a heavy frame | Reset hinges and posts, brace or square the frame |
| Remote works only up close | A weak remote battery, receiver or antenna | Replace the battery, test the receiver and the range |
| Dead after a power cut | A drained or failed backup battery | Test and replace the battery, check the charger |
Keep children, pets and vehicles clear of a gate that is leaning, dragging or damaged.

What the weather does to a gate
Wikipedia has no climate table for Cypress. Weather aggregator sites put July highs near 81 to 84 degrees, and neighboring Stanton and Westminster record about 13 inches of rain a year, so about 13 inches, almost all in winter, is a safe plain summary. Sun and heat age batteries, plastic parts and lubricants, and winter rain can reach keypads and control boxes.
Wikipedia says the city's cypress windbreak trees were planted to protect against the seasonal Santa Ana winds. We found no gust figure or dated outage for Cypress, but wind can swing a solid gate against its stops and loosen hinges, and a power cut leaves an electric gate stuck unless its backup battery is healthy.
Before the fall wind season, check hinges and latches, wipe the sensor lenses and test the backup battery.
- Check hinges, latches and stops after strong wind
- Test the backup battery before summer and fall
- Wipe sensor lenses and check keypads after rain

What customers say
Real reviews from our Google listing, copied as the customers wrote them.
Great to work with, gave us good advise and very knowledgeable with garage door springs . We could not find anyone to do our repair ASAP as it was a small project, but that did not matter to them. They traveled 2 hours to get the work done. Tech who did our repair was very personable, fast and did an excellent job.Theresa · Google review
I was really happy with the work Emil did for me. He was a responsive communicator, arrived on time, and did a quality job on the repair I needed. I would hire him again without hesitation.Serenity · Google review
Technician, Emil, was prompt and efficient to identify and fix the issues with our garage door. Rest assured that I won’t hesitate to call these folks if repair is needed.MeMee · Google review
Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina · Google review
"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela · Google review
Emil is delightful, knowledgeable, professional, and capable. He promised to make the process easy and he did. From our first contact Thursday mid-day through completion of the project Saturday at Noon, everything was 100% perfect, and we are extremely happy. We are amazed when we look outside and see our beautiful new door, so soon after searching on google. Emil and his company deserve 100 stars but we are limited to only 5Dawn · Google review

Four steps from call to done
You call or send the form
Give us your street or neighborhood and describe what the gate does.
We inspect structure and controls
We free the gate, then test the power supply, the backup battery, the board and the limits.
We agree on the work
You hear the options and the price, and nothing starts until you say yes.
We fix it and test it
We repair or replace the failed part and run the gate through full cycles with every safety device.
What to do while your gate waits for repair
An automatic gate can hurt someone, so until we arrive keep people, pets and vehicles clear of a gate that is leaning, dragging or not closing.
If the gate is stuck open or shut and you must move it, use the manual release the way the maker's instructions say, and never force a gate against its operator.
- Keep people, pets and vehicles away from the gate path
- Do not bypass or unplug the safety sensors
- Photograph the gate and the operator label, and note any blinking codes
Permits, HOAs and emergency access in Cypress
City permits. The City of Cypress's Building Division is at City Hall, 5275 Orange Avenue, phone (714) 229-6730, email buildingpermits@cypressca.org, with information on cypressca.org. The city asks residents to call to find out whether a project needs a permit. We found no city page on gates, gate operators or their wiring, so we could not confirm a gate-specific rule. Call the city before a new gate or new electrical work.
Fire service. The Orange County Fire Authority serves Cypress; ask it about key switch or Knox box requirements before you change a locked entry.
Emergency access. Fire and police need a way in. Before you install or change a locked entry, ask the local fire department about key switches and Knox boxes.

UL 325. This safety standard covers automatic gate operators and calls for entrapment protection such as photo eyes or safety edges. We test them before we leave.

Cypress gate repair: questions we hear
Is there gate repair near me in Cypress?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs swing and sliding driveway gates in Cypress (ZIP 90630) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (213) 340-4232, tell us your street or neighborhood, the gate type and what it does, and we book the soonest visit. See gate repair near me.
Is there electric gate repair near me in Cypress?
Yes. Electric gate repair near me in Cypress means a technician who repairs the operator, control board, sensors, remotes and backup battery as well as the gate itself. Call (213) 340-4232 and we book the soonest visit. See electric gate repair.
What is the difference between gate repair and electric gate repair in Cypress?
Gate repair means the gate itself: hinges, posts, latches, wheels, tracks and frames. Electric gate repair means the parts that move it: the operator, control board, sensors, remotes, keypads and battery. Most service calls need both checked, so we start with the gate and then test the electronics. See gate repair.
Why does my electric gate hum but not open?
The gate is probably binding, or a gear, arm or capacitor has failed. Do not keep running it, because that can burn out the motor. Call us and we free the gate and test the operator.
How much does gate repair cost in Cypress?
It depends on the gate type and the failed part. A remote, battery or sensor costs far less than a control board, an operator or a rebuilt post. We find the fault first, quote the price and start work only after you agree.
My gate does not work during a power outage. What can I do?
Most operators have a manual release, and many can use a backup battery. Use the release as the manufacturer directs and call us. We test the battery and the control board, because a flat battery or a board that lost its settings after an outage is common.
Should electric gates be serviced?
Yes. A yearly check of the battery, sensors, hinges or track, and operator keeps a gate from failing at a bad time.
Can you repair a gate operator from any brand?
We repair most residential operators. Tell us the brand and model, or send a photo of the unit. If parts are no longer made we explain your options.
Which ZIP code do you serve in Cypress?
Cypress uses ZIP code 90630. Some Cypress addresses, such as the Los Alamitos Race Course on Katella Avenue, carry the Los Alamitos ZIP 90720. Call us with your address if you are not sure we reach you.
Can you repair gates at townhome communities in Cypress?
Yes. About 17 percent of Cypress housing units are attached homes, according to the Census Bureau, and townhome entries are usually run by an association. Ask the association or its manager to approve the visit, and we repair the gate, the operator and the keypad or receiver.
Can a handyman fix a gate?
A handyman can handle a loose latch or a dead remote battery. A failed operator, a control board or a gate that has dropped off its hinges needs a technician who can test the controls and the safety devices.
Do you repair garage doors in Cypress too?
Yes. See garage door repair in Cypress for springs, cables, openers and new doors, and garage door repair near me. When you ask for both we can look at the gate and the garage door at the same address.
