Craftsman streets, landmark districts and hillsides
Pasadena is a large city of about 23 square miles. According to the Census Bureau's 2024 one-year American Community Survey estimates, the median home was built in 1965, about 43 percent of housing units are single-family detached houses, and about 41 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied. The rest is mostly multi-family housing, including some large apartment buildings.
Wikipedia says Bungalow Heaven is about 800 small Craftsman homes built between 1900 and 1930 and is a landmark district, and the city's flyer lists many more landmark districts. It also has hillside and estate areas. We could not confirm any named gated or HOA community in Pasadena, so check with your association before you change a gate.
On older houses and estates alike we start with the gate, its hinges, posts and track, and then test the operator, the sensors and the keypad. If your home is in a landmark district, ask the city before changing how the gate looks.

What Pasadena's climate does to a gate
Wikipedia's Pasadena climate table lists mean daily highs from 67.2 degrees in December to 91.3 degrees in August, a record high of 115 degrees and about 20 inches of rain a year, roughly 6 inches more than Los Angeles because of the San Gabriel Mountains. August heat is hard on backup batteries, plastic parts and lubricants.
For the January 7 and 8, 2025 Santa Ana windstorm, the City of Pasadena warned of winds of 30 to 50 mph with widespread gusts of 60 to 80 mph, and Pasadena Water and Power warned that it might shut off power to lower the fire risk, according to Pasadena Now. An electric gate without a healthy backup battery can stay shut or open through an outage.
Before fire and wind season, test the gate on battery power, practice the manual release and wipe the sensor lenses.
- Replace weak batteries before summer
- Practice the manual release
- Check hinges, latches and sensors after strong wind
Why gates in Pasadena stop working
Some of these have a quick check you can try. If they do not solve it, call us.
| What you notice | Likely cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Sliding gate jumps or scrapes on its track | Worn wheels, a dirty or bent track or a loose guide roller | Clean and straighten the track, replace wheels and rollers |
| Gate opens by itself or will not stay closed | A stuck input, a loop or sensor fault, or a loose latch | Trace the input, repair the sensor, realign the latch |
| Keypad or intercom is dead | Water in the unit, a wiring fault or a failed unit | Test the wiring, dry out or replace the keypad or intercom |
| Swing gate will not latch | The gate has dropped or the strike has moved | Realign the gate and the latch |
| Operator is slow or noisy | Dry hinges or bearings, a worn gear or arm, or a weak battery | Lubricate, replace the worn part, test the battery |
| Gate opens one way only | A limit setting, an obstruction or a failed board input | Reset the limits, clear the path, test the board |
Never stand in the path of an automatic gate while you test it.

What customers say

"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela Β· Google review
Emil is delightful, knowledgeable, professional, and capable. He promised to make the process easy and he did. From our first contact Thursday mid-day through completion of the project Saturday at Noon, everything was 100% perfect, and we are extremely happy. We are amazed when we look outside and see our beautiful new door, so soon after searching on google. Emil and his company deserve 100 stars but we are limited to only 5Dawn Β· Google review
It went very well, with the job being completed in three days. We waited few months for the supply chain to kick in ( Covid related delays ) and finally deliver the products. It was so worth the wait. Great installers, Emil and his team are professional and friendly, too, and patient in answering questions.Rachel Β· Google review

Permits, HOAs and emergency access in Pasadena
City permits. Pasadena's Permit Center is run by the Planning and Community Development Department, with Building and Safety at (626) 744-7601 and general permit questions at (626) 744-4200, details at cityofpasadena.net. The city's list of work exempt from permits does not mention gates or gate operators either way, so call the city before a new gate or new electrical work.
Landmark districts and fire zones. The city's flyer says a Certificate of Appropriateness is needed for exterior modifications in a landmark district, with questions to (626) 744-4009. Pasadena's 2025 Cal Fire map puts 4,610 properties in the Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, according to Pasadena Now, and we could not confirm which streets are included.
Emergency access. Gates can affect how fire and police reach a property. Ask the local fire department about key switch or Knox box requirements before you install or change a locked entry.
HOAs. If your neighborhood has an HOA with an architectural review board, ask before you change the design or color of a gate. We can write a scope of work for the review.
Safety standard. Automatic gate operators are covered by the UL 325 safety standard, which calls for entrapment protection such as photo eyes or safety edges. We test those devices before the gate goes back into service.
Pasadena gate repair: questions we hear
Is there gate repair near me in Pasadena?

Is there electric gate repair near me in Pasadena?
Yes. Electric gate repair near me in Pasadena means a technician who repairs the operator, control board, sensors, remotes and backup battery as well as the gate itself. Call (213) 340-4232 and we book the soonest visit. See electric gate repair.
What is the difference between gate repair and electric gate repair in Pasadena?
Gate repair means the gate itself: hinges, posts, latches, wheels, tracks and frames. Electric gate repair means the parts that move it: the operator, control board, sensors, remotes, keypads and battery. Most service calls need both checked, so we start with the gate and then test the electronics. See gate repair.
Why does my electric gate hum but not open?
A humming operator with a gate that will not move usually means the gate is jammed or a part in the operator has failed, such as a capacitor or gear. Stop using it and call us before the motor burns out.
How much does gate repair cost in Pasadena?
The price depends on what failed, the size and weight of the gate and the parts. We quote after we see the gate or photos, and before work starts.
My gate does not work during a power outage. What can I do?
Most operators have a manual release, and many can use a backup battery. Use the release as the manufacturer directs and call us. We test the battery and the control board, because a flat battery or a board that lost its settings after an outage is common.
Should electric gates be serviced?
Yes. A yearly check of the battery, sensors, hinges or track, and operator keeps a gate from failing at a bad time.
Can you repair a gate operator from any brand?
We repair most residential operators. Tell us the brand and model, or send a photo of the unit. If parts are no longer made we explain your options.
Which ZIP codes do you serve in Pasadena?
We serve the street ZIP codes 91101, 91103, 91104, 91105, 91106 and 91107. Other Pasadena ZIP codes are PO box only or belong to single organizations. Call us with your address if you are not sure we reach you.
Does my gate need approval if I live in a landmark district?
The city says a Certificate of Appropriateness is required for exterior modifications to a historic resource in a landmark district, and we could not confirm whether that covers a gate. If your home is in a Pasadena landmark district, ask Design and Historic Preservation before you change the look of a gate.
What happens to my electric gate during a power shutoff?
Pasadena Water and Power warned in January 2025 that it might shut off power during high winds to reduce fire risk. A gate with a healthy backup battery can usually be operated during an outage, and every gate should have a manual release. We test the battery and the release.
Can a handyman fix a gate?
A handyman can handle a loose latch or a dead remote battery. A failed operator, a control board or a gate that has dropped off its hinges needs a technician who can test the controls and the safety devices.
Do you repair garage doors in Pasadena too?
Yes. See garage door repair in Pasadena for springs, cables, openers and new doors, and garage door repair near me. When you ask for both we can look at the gate and the garage door at the same address.
