Mid-century single-family neighborhoods
San Gabriel covers about 4.2 square miles. According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey estimates, the median home was built in 1957, about 58 percent of housing units are single-family detached houses and about 12 percent are single-family attached homes. About half of occupied homes are owner-occupied.
Mission San Gabriel Arcangel was established in 1771, and City Hall and the Mission District are on Mission Drive, according to Wikipedia. Most of the city's homes, though, are houses from around the 1950s, an age when an original gate, hinge or operator may be due for work. We could not confirm any named gated or HOA community in San Gabriel, so check with your association before you change a gate.
We start with the gate itself, its hinges, posts and track, and then test the operator, sensors and remotes. If your home is in a historic district, ask the city before changing the look of the gate.

What San Gabriel's weather does to a gate
Wikipedia's climate box for the San Gabriel Fire Department station (1991-2020) lists a warmest mean daily high of 87.6 degrees in August, a coolest of 68.2 degrees in February, a record high of 112 degrees and a record low of 22 degrees, with about 15.7 inches of rain a year, mostly in winter. Summer heat ages batteries and plastic housings.
The January 2025 Santa Ana windstorm hit the San Gabriel Valley, and the City of Pasadena warned of 30 to 50 mph winds with 60 to 80 mph gusts, according to an NPR segment on Connecticut Public. We found no San Gabriel gust reading or outage figures. Strong wind can knock a sliding gate off its track or misalign a photo eye.
Test the backup battery before summer, wipe the sensor lenses and clear the track of leaves and debris.
- Test the backup battery before summer
- Clear the track and wipe the sensors
- Check alignment after strong wind
What customers say
Real reviews from our Google listing, copied as the customers wrote them.
"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela Β· Google review
Emil is delightful, knowledgeable, professional, and capable. He promised to make the process easy and he did. From our first contact Thursday mid-day through completion of the project Saturday at Noon, everything was 100% perfect, and we are extremely happy. We are amazed when we look outside and see our beautiful new door, so soon after searching on google. Emil and his company deserve 100 stars but we are limited to only 5Dawn Β· Google review
It went very well, with the job being completed in three days. We waited few months for the supply chain to kick in ( Covid related delays ) and finally deliver the products. It was so worth the wait. Great installers, Emil and his team are professional and friendly, too, and patient in answering questions.Rachel Β· Google review

Permits, HOAs and emergency access in San Gabriel
City permits. San Gabriel's City Hall is at 425 S. Mission Drive, (626) 308-2800, and its Building and Planning counter takes walk-ins from 8 to 11:30 a.m. and appointments from 1 to 5 p.m., according to the city's permits page. That page lists building, demolition and encroachment permits and says Planning approval is usually needed first, but it does not mention gates or gate operators. Ask the city before a new gate or new electrical work.
Emergency access. Gates can affect how fire and police reach a property. Ask the local fire department about key switch or Knox box requirements before you install or change a locked entry.
HOAs. If your neighborhood has an HOA with an architectural review board, ask before you change the design or color of a gate. We can write a scope of work for the review.
Safety standard. Automatic gate operators are covered by the UL 325 safety standard, which calls for entrapment protection such as photo eyes or safety edges. We test those devices before the gate goes back into service.
San Gabriel gate repair: questions we hear
Is there gate repair near me in San Gabriel?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs swing and sliding driveway gates in San Gabriel (ZIP codes 91775 and 91776) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (213) 340-4232, tell us your street or neighborhood, the gate type and what it does, and we book the soonest visit. See gate repair near me.
Is there electric gate repair near me in San Gabriel?
Yes. Electric gate repair near me in San Gabriel means a technician who repairs the operator, control board, sensors, remotes and backup battery as well as the gate itself. Call (213) 340-4232 and we book the soonest visit. See electric gate repair.
What is the difference between gate repair and electric gate repair in San Gabriel?
Gate repair means the gate itself: hinges, posts, latches, wheels, tracks and frames. Electric gate repair means the parts that move it: the operator, control board, sensors, remotes, keypads and battery. Most service calls need both checked, so we start with the gate and then test the electronics. See gate repair.
Why does my electric gate hum but not open?
A humming operator with a gate that will not move usually means the gate is jammed or a part in the operator has failed, such as a capacitor or gear. Stop using it and call us before the motor burns out.
How much does gate repair cost in San Gabriel?
The price depends on what failed, the size and weight of the gate and the parts. We quote after we see the gate or photos, and before work starts.
My gate does not work during a power outage. What can I do?
Most operators have a manual release, and many can use a backup battery. Use the release as the manufacturer directs and call us. We test the battery and the control board, because a flat battery or a board that lost its settings after an outage is common.
Should electric gates be serviced?
Yes. A yearly check of the battery, sensors, hinges or track, and operator keeps a gate from failing at a bad time.
Can you repair a gate operator from any brand?
We repair most residential operators. Tell us the brand and model, or send a photo of the unit. If parts are no longer made we explain your options.
Which ZIP codes do you serve in San Gabriel?
We serve ZIP codes 91775 and 91776. ZIP code 91778 is PO box only. Call us with your address if you are not sure we reach you.
Does historic review apply to a gate in San Gabriel?
According to a third-party summary of the city code, a Historic Preservation and Cultural Resource Commission reviews major alterations to landmarks, inventory properties and historic districts. We could not confirm whether a gate counts as major or minor, so ask city Planning if your home is in a historic district.
Can a handyman fix a gate?
A handyman can handle a loose latch or a dead remote battery. A failed operator, a control board or a gate that has dropped off its hinges needs a technician who can test the controls and the safety devices.
Do you repair garage doors in San Gabriel too?
Yes. See garage door repair in San Gabriel for springs, cables, openers and new doors, and garage door repair near me. When you ask for both we can look at the gate and the garage door at the same address.
