What Santa Monica Bay does to a gate
NOAA normals shown on Wikipedia list mean daily highs of 72.1 degrees in June, 75.6 in July and 76.5 in August, with about 13.8 inches of rain a year over roughly 35 precipitation days. Mild summers are easier on batteries and seals than inland heat.
ABC7 reported that early on October 11, 2016, nearly 100,000 customers lost power in South Bay cities including Redondo Beach. Santa Ana winds are most common from October through March, according to weather.com. The city sits on Santa Monica Bay, and salt in coastal air is a general factor for hinges and electronics, though we found no Redondo-specific measurement.
Rinse and lubricate hinges and rollers each season, wipe the sensor lenses and test the backup battery.

- Test the backup battery before wind season

Beach-area houses, townhomes and condos
Redondo Beach is one of the three Beach Cities on southern Santa Monica Bay. According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey, the median home was built in 1973, about 40 percent of housing units are single-family detached houses, another 13 percent or so are attached single-family homes, about 18 percent are in buildings with 20 or more units and about 53 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied.
That mix means many gates guard condo and townhome entries, shared driveways and single-family lots near the coast. A listing source describes Breakwater Village as an age-restricted community with gated security; there is no official list of gated or HOA communities, so check your association's rules before you change an entry.
On a shared entry we ask who authorizes the work, then test the operator, keypad, intercom, sensors and battery backup.

- Swing and sliding gates on single-family lots
- Sensors, remotes and battery backup

Why gates in Redondo Beach stop working
Some of these have a quick check you can try. If they do not solve it, call us.
| What you notice | Likely cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Sliding gate jumps or scrapes on its track | Worn wheels, a dirty or bent track or a loose guide roller | Clean and straighten the track, replace wheels and rollers |
| Gate opens by itself or will not stay closed | A stuck input, a loop or sensor fault, or a loose latch | Trace the input, repair the sensor, realign the latch |
| Keypad or intercom is dead | Water in the unit, a wiring fault or a failed unit | Test the wiring, dry out or replace the keypad or intercom |
| Swing gate will not latch | The gate has dropped or the strike has moved | Realign the gate and the latch |
| Operator is slow or noisy | Dry hinges or bearings, a worn gear or arm, or a weak battery | Lubricate, replace the worn part, test the battery |
| Gate opens one way only | A limit setting, an obstruction or a failed board input | Reset the limits, clear the path, test the board |
Never stand in the path of an automatic gate while you test it.

Great company to use for garage door work. Came out promptly, over a weekend when I could not get others to respond. Efficient work, very knowledgeable, very friendly. I would not hesitate to contact them first the next time I need service.Courtney · Google review
Incredible honest work. Emil took care of all the repairs needed in order for my garage door to work again. I know I need a new garage door but I can't afford it right now this company was nice enough to fix it instead of hounding me for more money to get a new door. Emil was so nice that he even provided me a price. I was so happy he said I could call him when I had the money and he would honor me the price. amazing company to reach out to.Jasmine · Google review

I have been using them for few years. They are professional, reliable (especially in emergencies (springs breaking)), customer service is always polite and helpful, and their prices cannot be beat!!Deborah · Google review
Doesn't get any better than this guy! I have recently purchased a condo with a broken garage door opener. It was missing some brackets. I called them, and Emil came out promptly the next morning. On time! He was able to run back to his shop and get the bracket I needed. It took him less than an hour to complete the entire project! My garage door works great now. I said a little thank you to Emil as I opened my garage door late last night and drove in my garage. I would definitely call him again if I needed anything done with my garage door. Highly recommend, plus he's just a super nice guy, which the process so much easier. Thanks Emil!Winston · Google review

Permits, HOAs and emergency access in Redondo Beach
City permits. Redondo Beach Building and Safety is at 415 Diamond Street, Door 2, phone (310) 318-0636, email BuildingRedondo@redondo.org, with applications submitted electronically through the city's portal, linked from redondo.org. The online over-the-counter permit types on the page are reroof, electrical, plumbing and mechanical, and contractors need a valid city business license before a permit is issued. The page does not address gates or gate operators, so we could not confirm whether a gate or its wiring needs a permit. Call the city before a new gate or new electrical work.
Emergency access. Gates can affect how fire and police reach a property. Ask the local fire department about key switch or Knox box requirements before you install or change a locked entry.
HOAs. If your neighborhood has an HOA with an architectural review board, ask before you change the design or color of a gate. We can write a scope of work for the review.
Safety standard. Automatic gate operators are covered by the UL 325 safety standard, which calls for entrapment protection such as photo eyes or safety edges. We test those devices before the gate goes back into service.

Redondo Beach gate repair: questions we hear
Is there gate repair near me in Redondo Beach?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs swing and sliding driveway gates in Redondo Beach (ZIP codes 90277 and 90278) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (213) 340-4232, tell us your street or neighborhood, the gate type and what it does, and we book the soonest visit. See gate repair near me.
Is there electric gate repair near me in Redondo Beach?
Yes. Electric gate repair near me in Redondo Beach means a technician who repairs the operator, control board, sensors, remotes and backup battery as well as the gate itself. Call (213) 340-4232 and we book the soonest visit. See electric gate repair.
What is the difference between gate repair and electric gate repair in Redondo Beach?
Gate repair means the gate itself: hinges, posts, latches, wheels, tracks and frames. Electric gate repair means the parts that move it: the operator, control board, sensors, remotes, keypads and battery. Most service calls need both checked, so we start with the gate and then test the electronics. See gate repair.
Why does my electric gate hum but not open?
A humming operator with a gate that will not move usually means the gate is jammed or a part in the operator has failed, such as a capacitor or gear. Stop using it and call us before the motor burns out.
How much does gate repair cost in Redondo Beach?
The price depends on what failed, the size and weight of the gate and the parts. We quote after we see the gate or photos, and before work starts.
My gate does not work during a power outage. What can I do?
Most operators have a manual release, and many can use a backup battery. Use the release as the manufacturer directs and call us. We test the battery and the control board, because a flat battery or a board that lost its settings after an outage is common.
Should electric gates be serviced?
Yes. A yearly check of the battery, sensors, hinges or track, and operator keeps a gate from failing at a bad time.
Can you repair a gate operator from any brand?
We repair most residential operators. Tell us the brand and model, or send a photo of the unit. If parts are no longer made we explain your options.
Which ZIP codes do you serve in Redondo Beach?
Redondo Beach uses ZIP codes 90277 and 90278, and 90277 also covers part of west Torrance. Call us with your address if you are not sure we reach you.
Does the coast shorten the life of a gate in Redondo Beach?
Salt in coastal air can corrode hinges, bolts and electronics faster than inland air. Rinsing and lubricating hinges, tracks and rollers helps, and we replace corroded parts when we repair a gate.
Can a handyman fix a gate?
A handyman can handle a loose latch or a dead remote battery. A failed operator, a control board or a gate that has dropped off its hinges needs a technician who can test the controls and the safety devices.
Do you repair garage doors in Redondo Beach too?
Yes. See garage door repair in Redondo Beach for springs, cables, openers and new doors, and garage door repair near me. When you ask for both we can look at the gate and the garage door at the same address.
