What customers say
Real reviews from our Google listing, copied as the customers wrote them.
Not paying attention I closed the garage door on a pipe laying in the track. Needless to say it did some damage even though the automatic reverse opened the door back up. Emailed what happened on Sunday evening. Appointment with quote provided in just a few minutes and appointment confirmed. Once again they arrived on time. Completed repairs quickly and for less then the quote. Cleaned up like they were never there. I highly recommend them and will continue to use them for my garage door repairs.Carroll · Google review
Technician showed up on time, assessed our issue & presented replacement options. He proceeded to install new equipment during the same visit and everything was finished in less than two hours. We were impressed with the performance of our tech. It’s easy for us to recommend this company.Kathleen · Google review
The replacement of my broken spring was done quickly and professionaly. I was also provided an explanation on why the tension was set as it was. I was called in advance to be informed of the arrival time. Great job as it has been in the pastFrancine · Google review
My garage door spring broke the other evening and I was unable to open my door. I contacted them first thing the next day. They were able to give me an appointment for later in that day. The service technician called prior to arrival as promised & arrived shortly afterwards. He recommended some additional service to the door in addition to the springs which I accepted. The door was repaired in less than 2 hours & now works better than ever. Thank youBrandi · Google review
Great to work with, gave us good advise and very knowledgeable with garage door springs . We could not find anyone to do our repair ASAP as it was a small project, but that did not matter to them. They traveled 2 hours to get the work done. Tech who did our repair was very personable, fast and did an excellent job.Theresa · Google review
I was really happy with the work Emil did for me. He was a responsive communicator, arrived on time, and did a quality job on the repair I needed. I would hire him again without hesitation.Serenity · Google review

Tract homes, older downtown houses and hillside lots
Ventura, formally the City of San Buenaventura, is the Ventura County seat. According to the Census Bureau's 2024 five-year American Community Survey estimates, the median home was built in 1973, about 54 percent of housing units are single-family detached houses and about 11 percent are attached homes. The rest are small and large multifamily buildings.
The same survey puts owner-occupancy at about 56 percent. Wikipedia describes houses from the 1920s oil boom near downtown, and neighborhoods that include Hobson Heights, Pierpont, Midtown, the Westside and the Hillsides. Hillside lots can mean steeper driveways, and gates on a slope can drift or bind. We could not confirm any gated or HOA community in Ventura, so check with your association before you change a gate.
On an older gate we check the posts, hinges, rollers and track for wear, then test the operator, the sensors and the remote on the load they actually carry.
- Hillside and sloped driveways
- Older downtown houses and 1970s tract homes
- Operators, keypads and sensors that have aged

Why gates in Ventura stop working
Some of these have a quick check you can try. If they do not solve it, call us.
| What you notice | Likely cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Sliding gate jumps or scrapes on its track | Worn wheels, a dirty or bent track or a loose guide roller | Clean and straighten the track, replace wheels and rollers |
| Gate opens by itself or will not stay closed | A stuck input, a loop or sensor fault, or a loose latch | Trace the input, repair the sensor, realign the latch |
| Keypad or intercom is dead | Water in the unit, a wiring fault or a failed unit | Test the wiring, dry out or replace the keypad or intercom |
| Swing gate will not latch | The gate has dropped or the strike has moved | Realign the gate and the latch |
| Operator is slow or noisy | Dry hinges or bearings, a worn gear or arm, or a weak battery | Lubricate, replace the worn part, test the battery |
| Gate opens one way only | A limit setting, an obstruction or a failed board input | Reset the limits, clear the path, test the board |
Never stand in the path of an automatic gate while you test it.

What Ventura's conditions do to a gate
Wikipedia's climate table lists average highs of about 76 to 77 degrees in July and August, about 16 inches of rain a year, mostly from December to March, and says sea breezes moderate the climate while Santa Ana winds occasionally raise temperatures sharply. Winter rain can get into low keypads and control boxes.
The National Weather Service, as quoted by Wikipedia, recorded Santa Ana gusts of 60 mph on December 4, 2017 and up to 70 mph the next day, when the Thomas Fire began. The fire reached Ventura hillside neighborhoods including Clearpoint, Ondulando and Skyline and destroyed hundreds of homes in the city. Edison's public safety power shutoffs have also affected Ventura County, including an October 2019 event reported by KCLU. We could not confirm which Ventura neighborhoods lost power. A gate with a dead battery can leave you locked in or out.
Before fall wind season, test the backup battery, check the manual release and tighten loose hinge bolts and latches.
- Test the backup battery before fall
- Know where the manual release is
- Keep hinges, latches and sensors clear and tight

Permits, HOAs and emergency access in Ventura
City permits. The City of San Buenaventura's Building and Safety office is at 501 Poli Street, Room 117, (805) 654-7869, with information on cityofventura.ca.gov. The city lists residential permit sheets, but we could not read them, so we could not confirm whether a gate, a gate operator or its wiring needs a permit. Call Building and Safety before a new gate or new electrical work.
Fire, historic and coastal rules. The city's fire zone map puts hillside neighborhoods including Clearpoint, Ondulando, Skyline, Ventura Hills and the Westside in High or Very High zones. The city's municipal code, as published on a code mirror, requires design review for exterior changes to a designated landmark and for projects in a Historic District overlay. We did not find a gate-specific rule, so ask the city if your home is near the coast or on a historic list.
Emergency access. Gates can affect how fire and police reach a property. Ask the local fire department about key switch or Knox box requirements before you install or change a locked entry.
HOAs. If your neighborhood has an HOA with an architectural review board, ask before you change the design or color of a gate. We can write a scope of work for the review.
Safety standard. Automatic gate operators are covered by the UL 325 safety standard, which calls for entrapment protection such as photo eyes or safety edges. We test those devices before the gate goes back into service.

Ventura gate repair: questions we hear
Is there gate repair near me in Ventura?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs swing and sliding driveway gates in Ventura (ZIP codes 93001, 93003 and 93004) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (213) 340-4232, tell us your street or neighborhood, the gate type and what it does, and we book the soonest visit. See gate repair near me.
Is there electric gate repair near me in Ventura?
Yes. Electric gate repair near me in Ventura means a technician who repairs the operator, control board, sensors, remotes and backup battery as well as the gate itself. Call (213) 340-4232 and we book the soonest visit. See electric gate repair.
What is the difference between gate repair and electric gate repair in Ventura?
Gate repair means the gate itself: hinges, posts, latches, wheels, tracks and frames. Electric gate repair means the parts that move it: the operator, control board, sensors, remotes, keypads and battery. Most service calls need both checked, so we start with the gate and then test the electronics. See gate repair.
Why does my electric gate hum but not open?
A humming operator with a gate that will not move usually means the gate is jammed or a part in the operator has failed, such as a capacitor or gear. Stop using it and call us before the motor burns out.
How much does gate repair cost in Ventura?
The price depends on what failed, the size and weight of the gate and the parts. We quote after we see the gate or photos, and before work starts.
My gate does not work during a power outage. What can I do?
Most operators have a manual release, and many can use a backup battery. Use the release as the manufacturer directs and call us. We test the battery and the control board, because a flat battery or a board that lost its settings after an outage is common.
Should electric gates be serviced?
Yes. A yearly check of the battery, sensors, hinges or track, and operator keeps a gate from failing at a bad time.
Can you repair a gate operator from any brand?
We repair most residential operators. Tell us the brand and model, or send a photo of the unit. If parts are no longer made we explain your options.
Which ZIP codes do you serve in Ventura?
Ventura city homes use ZIP codes 93001, 93003 and 93004. These ZIP codes also include the unincorporated communities of Casitas Springs, La Conchita and Saticoy, which are not part of the city. Call us with your address if you are not sure we reach you.
Does the Thomas Fire area change how I should maintain my gate?
The Thomas Fire reached Ventura hillside neighborhoods in December 2017. The city says owners in High and Very High fire zones must clear vegetation within 100 feet of structures by June 1 each year. For a gate, we test the battery backup and the manual release so it can still be opened when the power is out.
Can a power shutoff leave my gate stuck in Ventura?
Edison's public safety power shutoffs have affected Ventura County during Santa Ana wind events. An electric gate then relies on its backup battery or manual release. We test both and replace a battery that has weakened.
Can a handyman fix a gate?
A handyman can handle a loose latch or a dead remote battery. A failed operator, a control board or a gate that has dropped off its hinges needs a technician who can test the controls and the safety devices.
Do you repair garage doors in Ventura too?
Yes. See garage door repair in Ventura for springs, cables, openers and new doors, and garage door repair near me. When you ask for both we can look at the gate and the garage door at the same address.
