A large, flat city with houses, townhomes and condos
According to the Census Bureau's 2024 estimates, the median home in Garden Grove was built in 1964. About 55 percent of homes are detached single-family houses, about 7 percent are attached, and about 23 percent are in buildings of five or more units. Roughly half of occupied homes are rented (48 percent), so owners, tenants and property managers all call about doors.
Wikipedia says Alonzo Cook founded Garden Grove in 1874 and the city was incorporated on 18 June 1956. The Pacific Electric Railroad arrived in 1905, and the Strawberry Festival has been held every Memorial Day weekend since 1958. Christ Cathedral is a landmark, State Route 22 runs east to west through the city, and Beach Boulevard, Garden Grove Boulevard, Chapman Avenue, Brookhurst Street and Harbor Boulevard are main streets. The city covers about 18 square miles at an elevation of 89 feet.
A townhome or condo garage often has a single-car door, and an association may have rules for style and color. One realtor blog describes Lakeside Garden Grove as a 286-unit condo complex run by an HOA; that is not a city source, so check with your own association before you order a new door.

What Garden Grove weather does to a garage door
Wikipedia has no climate table for Garden Grove, so these figures come from WeatherSpark, a third-party weather site that does not name its station. It puts the hot season, with highs above 80 degrees, from about 7 July to 30 September, August as the hottest month with an average high of 82, February as the wettest at about 3 inches and July at almost none. For comparison, the Fullerton Municipal Airport normals give 11.86 inches of rain a year.
WeatherSpark says the windier period runs from about 9 November to 12 May, with December the windiest month at an average of 7.6 mph. We found no dated Garden Grove wind, heat or power-outage record. Wikipedia says the 1933 Long Beach earthquake destroyed much of Garden Grove's central business district.
Twice a year, wipe the tracks and the two sensors near the floor, oil the rollers and hinges and press the battery-backup test button. If the door scrapes or shakes on its way up, stop using it and call us.
- Wipe tracks and sensors twice a year

Great company to use for garage door work. Came out promptly, over a weekend when I could not get others to respond. Efficient work, very knowledgeable, very friendly. I would not hesitate to contact them first the next time I need service.Courtney · Google review
Incredible honest work. Emil took care of all the repairs needed in order for my garage door to work again. I know I need a new garage door but I can't afford it right now this company was nice enough to fix it instead of hounding me for more money to get a new door. Emil was so nice that he even provided me a price. I was so happy he said I could call him when I had the money and he would honor me the price. amazing company to reach out to.Jasmine · Google review

I have been using them for few years. They are professional, reliable (especially in emergencies (springs breaking)), customer service is always polite and helpful, and their prices cannot be beat!!Deborah · Google review
Doesn't get any better than this guy! I have recently purchased a condo with a broken garage door opener. It was missing some brackets. I called them, and Emil came out promptly the next morning. On time! He was able to run back to his shop and get the bracket I needed. It took him less than an hour to complete the entire project! My garage door works great now. I said a little thank you to Emil as I opened my garage door late last night and drove in my garage. I would definitely call him again if I needed anything done with my garage door. Highly recommend, plus he's just a super nice guy, which the process so much easier. Thanks Emil!Winston · Google review

Battery backup, permits and design rules in Garden Grove
Opener law. A battery backup is required on residential openers sold or installed in California (Health and Safety Code section 19892), and a replacement door cannot be connected to an older opener without one. If your opener is old, plan for a new one. See opener installation.
Associations. Check any HOA or historic overlay rules before you order a new door, and see new garage doors for style options.
Garden Grove Building & Safety. The permit counter is reached at (714) 741-5307, email building@ggcity.org, with City Hall at 11222 Acacia Parkway (ggcity.org). The city page says plan checks and permit issuance are accepted until 4:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, and applications go through the city's online portal. The page has no list of exempt work, and the city's 28 bulletins and handouts have nothing on garage doors or openers, so we could not confirm whether a garage door or opener replacement needs a permit.
Electrical work. The city has bulletins on electrical permits and panel changes, but it does not say whether an opener with new wiring needs one. Call Building and Safety before a replacement and confirm the answer with the city.

Garden Grove garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Garden Grove?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Garden Grove (ZIP 92840 to 92845) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (213) 340-4232, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Garden Grove?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Garden Grove?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP codes do you serve in Garden Grove?
Garden Grove's street-delivery ZIP codes are 92840, 92841, 92843, 92844 and 92845. ZIPs 92842 and 92846 are for post office boxes. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.
Does a garage door replacement need a permit in Garden Grove?
We could not confirm a garage-door-specific rule. The city's Building and Safety page and its list of bulletins do not mention garage doors or openers, so call (714) 741-5307 before a replacement and confirm the number with the city.
Do you serve West Garden Grove?
Yes. West Garden Grove is a neighborhood of the city that is separated from the rest by Stanton, and it follows Garden Grove's rules. Call us with your street and we confirm that we reach it.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can often deal with a dirty sensor or a worn roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and can injure someone, so leave those to a trained technician.
Does California require a battery backup on a garage door opener?
Yes. California Health and Safety Code section 19892 says residential openers sold or installed in the state need a battery backup, and a replacement garage door cannot be connected to an older residential opener that lacks one.
Do you also repair gates in Garden Grove?
Yes. See gate repair and electric gate repair.
