Downtown bungalows and Victorians, and 1970s suburban streets
According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 estimates, the median home in Martinez was built in 1977. About 71 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied, about 64 percent of all homes are detached houses and another 15 percent are attached, so roughly four in five homes have their own garage. Springs are rated for a set number of open-and-close cycles, and doors from the 1970s and 1980s are often on their second set of springs or past it.
Wikipedia says Martinez was incorporated on April 1, 1876, is the Contra Costa County seat, and that John Muir lived there from 1880 until his death in 1914. Its landmarks include the Contra Costa County Courthouse of 1901, the Vicente Martinez Adobe of 1849 and the Art Deco Martinez Library of 1941. The dense downtown sits in the Alhambra Creek valley, and the suburban areas stretch south of Highway 4. We could not verify any homeowners associations.
Downtown garages can be small or detached, while suburban ones are usually attached two-car doors. Tell us the cross street and the age of the door if you know it, and we book the soonest visit. We weigh and balance each door before choosing springs.

What customers say
Real reviews from our Google listing, copied as the customers wrote them.
Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina Β· Google review
"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela Β· Google review
Emil is delightful, knowledgeable, professional, and capable. He promised to make the process easy and he did. From our first contact Thursday mid-day through completion of the project Saturday at Noon, everything was 100% perfect, and we are extremely happy. We are amazed when we look outside and see our beautiful new door, so soon after searching on google. Emil and his company deserve 100 stars but we are limited to only 5Dawn Β· Google review
It went very well, with the job being completed in three days. We waited few months for the supply chain to kick in ( Covid related delays ) and finally deliver the products. It was so worth the wait. Great installers, Emil and his team are professional and friendly, too, and patient in answering questions.Rachel Β· Google review

What Martinez conditions do to a garage door
Wikipedia's climate table for Martinez uses a Western Regional Climate Center station called Martinez WTP. It puts the mean July daily high at 89.0 degrees, with a record high of 115 in July and annual precipitation of 19.39 inches. Summers are warm and dry, with some morning fog during sea breezes. Heat dries out rubber seals and lubricant, so a door that ran fine in spring can start to bind by August.
Cal Fire lists the Alhambra Fire of August 17, 2018, about 30 acres off Highway 4 and Alhambra Avenue. A brush fire on October 27, 2019 burned about 50 acres near Alhambra Avenue, with evacuation orders around Macalvey Drive, Morello Avenue and Sunnybrae Drive, per Patch. That month PG&E listed Martinez among the cities that might lose power in a safety shutoff, about 40,219 Contra Costa customers in that round, which is why a battery backup matters. The Martinez Refining Company fire began about 1:30 p.m. on February 1, 2025; per the company, six people needed medical attention, and a shelter-in-place alert that afternoon was lifted that evening. We mention it only as local context.
Test the battery backup twice a year, know where the manual release is, and oil the rollers and hinges before summer. If you smell smoke or have been told to evacuate, close the door and leave first, and call us later.

Battery backup, permits and design rules in Martinez
Battery backup. California Health and Safety Code section 19892 says residential garage door openers sold or installed in the state need a battery backup, and a replacement garage door cannot be connected to an older residential opener that lacks one. See opener installation.
HOAs and style rules. If you live in a planned community or a historic overlay, check style and color rules before you choose a new door. See new garage doors for styles.
City permits. Martinez is its own city, so its rules come from the City of Martinez, not Contra Costa County. The Permit Center is at City Hall, 525 Henrietta Street, and search-result text of the city's pages lists (925) 372-3550 and counter hours of Monday to Friday, 8:00 to 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. An older mirror says 9 to 3, and the city site did not open for us, so confirm the number and hours at cityofmartinez.org. We found no city page on garage doors, so we could not confirm whether a garage door or opener replacement needs a permit. Pacheco and the Alhambra Valley are outside city limits and fall under Contra Costa County.
Downtown Historic Overlay and fire zones. The Downtown Historic Overlay District (Chapter 22.27 of the zoning code) uses the design standards in the Downtown Martinez Specific Plan, and proposals in the overlay are referred to the Martinez Historical Society for comment. Chapter 22.47 defines an alteration as any exterior change to a property in a historic district. We could not confirm whether a plain garage door swap needs design review, so if your home is downtown, ask the city before changing a street-facing door. The city says its Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone map from 2009 had not been adopted under SB 63, and it points residents to the Cal Fire viewer, so check your address there.

Martinez garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Martinez?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Martinez (ZIP 94553) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (213) 340-4232, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Martinez?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Martinez?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP code do you serve in Martinez?
Martinez homes use ZIP code 94553, the city's only ZIP code. It also serves the unincorporated communities of Pacheco and the Alhambra Valley, and zip-codes.com lists Briones and Pacheco as aliases, so call us with your street and we confirm we reach it. We also serve nearby Benicia, Hercules and Pinole.
Do I need design review to replace a garage door downtown in Martinez?
We could not confirm this. The Downtown Historic Overlay District sends proposals to the Martinez Historical Society for comment, and the city's zoning code defines an alteration as any exterior change in a historic district. We could not verify whether a garage door swap counts, so ask the Martinez building department before you order a new door.
Does a garage door replacement in Martinez need a permit?
We could not confirm a garage-door-specific permit rule for Martinez, because we found no city page on garage doors. Call the Martinez Permit Center at (925) 372-3550 to ask whether your door or opener work needs one, and confirm the number and hours first.
Should I have a battery backup on my opener in Martinez?
It is a good idea. In October 2019 PG&E listed Martinez among the cities that might lose power in a safety shutoff, and a battery backup lets the opener work during an outage. If your opener has no backup, we can install one with a replacement belt-drive opener.
Does California require a battery backup on a garage door opener?
Yes. California Health and Safety Code section 19892 says residential openers sold or installed in the state need a battery backup, and a replacement garage door cannot be connected to an older residential opener that lacks one.
Do you also repair gates in Martinez?
Yes. See gate repair and electric gate repair.
