Great company to use for garage door work. Came out promptly, over a weekend when I could not get others to respond. Efficient work, very knowledgeable, very friendly. I would not hesitate to contact them first the next time I need service.Courtney · Google review
Incredible honest work. Emil took care of all the repairs needed in order for my garage door to work again. I know I need a new garage door but I can't afford it right now this company was nice enough to fix it instead of hounding me for more money to get a new door. Emil was so nice that he even provided me a price. I was so happy he said I could call him when I had the money and he would honor me the price. amazing company to reach out to.Jasmine · Google review

I have been using them for few years. They are professional, reliable (especially in emergencies (springs breaking)), customer service is always polite and helpful, and their prices cannot be beat!!Deborah · Google review
Doesn't get any better than this guy! I have recently purchased a condo with a broken garage door opener. It was missing some brackets. I called them, and Emil came out promptly the next morning. On time! He was able to run back to his shop and get the bracket I needed. It took him less than an hour to complete the entire project! My garage door works great now. I said a little thank you to Emil as I opened my garage door late last night and drove in my garage. I would definitely call him again if I needed anything done with my garage door. Highly recommend, plus he's just a super nice guy, which the process so much easier. Thanks Emil!Winston · Google review

Mostly single-family houses, built around 1964
According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey, Westfield has about 16,800 housing units, a median year built of 1964, and about 69 percent of households own their home. Around 60 percent of units are single-family detached houses, and the city also has two- to four-family buildings, apartments and 436 mobile homes. Many original doors and openers are now 60 years old or close to it.
The Westfield River divides the city into the South Side and the North Side, and Wyben is the northwestern section. At about 47 square miles Westfield is large, so tell us your street when you call. Landmarks include the United States Whip Company Complex and the Westfield Athenaeum. We could not verify any local historic district rule for garage doors, so ask the city if your house is old.
Tell us your cross street and whether the door is a single, a double or a pair, and we book the soonest visit. We weigh and balance each door before choosing new springs.
- Original springs and openers on homes from the 1960s
- Single doors under two- and three-family buildings
- Wide doors on larger single-family lots

What your garage door is telling you in Westfield
A starting point. We confirm the cause on site.
| The door does this | Common cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Slams down or will not lift | A broken torsion spring | Replace the spring set, balance the door, test the safety reverse |
| Opener hums but the door stays put | A broken spring or a disconnected trolley | Find which one failed, then repair and rebalance |
| One side hangs lower than the other | A slipped or snapped lift cable | Replace the cable, check the drum and level the door |
| Loud grinding or rattling | Dry or worn rollers, loose hinges | Replace rollers and hinges, lubricate and tighten |
| Reverses before it reaches the floor | Misaligned or dirty safety sensors | Clean and realign the sensors, test the reverse |
Do not run a door that is crooked or heavy.

What Westfield winters do to a garage door
Wikipedia's Westfield-Barnes Regional Airport table (1981-2010 normals) shows a January mean high of 32.9 degrees and mean low of 12.9, a record low of minus 20 and about 48 inches of precipitation a year. Regional 1991-2020 figures from Bradley International Airport give about 51.7 inches of snow a year. Cold at that level stiffens springs, cables and bottom seals, ice binds the door to the slab, and road salt tracked into the garage wears tracks, rollers and hinges.
Wikipedia says the Westfield River has flooded parts of the city several times and the city is still considered flood-prone. According to news summaries, the June 1, 2011 tornado first touched down in Westfield and did mostly tree and power-line damage, with broken windows on 257 homes. Westfield Gas & Electric, the city's own utility, serves the city, and an outage means the opener stops, so learn where the red manual release is.
Before winter, wipe the tracks, lubricate the rollers and hinges, check the bottom seal for cracks and test the safety reverse. After a storm, clear snow and ice from the base of the door before you run the opener.
- Check the bottom seal before the first freeze
- Rinse road salt off the tracks and rollers
- Know where the manual release is

Opener safety, permits and design rules in Westfield
Opener safety. The federal standard for residential garage door operators (Consumer Product Safety Commission, 16 CFR part 1211) calls for automatic reversing and entrapment protection such as photo-eye sensors. If yours stopped working, we test the reverse and the sensors and repair or replace what failed. See opener installation.
Design rules. Planned communities and historic districts can limit door style and color. Ask before you choose a new door: new garage doors.
City permits. Westfield is a city with its own Building Department, in City Hall at 59 Court Street, phone 413-572-6251. The department issues building, electrical, plumbing and gas permits, and its page lists a $500 fine plus the permit fee for residential work done without a permit. Owners of an owner-occupied one- or two-family home may take out permits for their own repairs, but electrical, plumbing and gas work must be done and permitted by a professional holding a Massachusetts license. Online permitting runs through the city's OpenGov portal. The page does not mention doors, garage doors or any exemption, so we could not confirm whether a garage door replacement needs a permit. Call the department before the work, or see the city's Building Department page.
State rules. Massachusetts requires home improvement contractors who work on owner-occupied one- to four-family homes to be registered, and a registered contractor must show the registration number in advertising, so check any contractor's HIC number before you sign. We did not verify whether garage door work falls under that registration. The state building code exempts ordinary repairs and some minor work from a permit application, but its list does not name door replacement.

Westfield garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Westfield?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Westfield (ZIP 01085) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (617) 644-5527, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Westfield?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Westfield?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP code do you serve in Westfield?
Westfield's street ZIP code is 01085. ZIP 01086 is for PO boxes only. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.
Do you serve both the North Side and the South Side of Westfield?
Yes. The Westfield River divides the city, and we serve homes on both sides, from North Road to Pontoosuc Avenue and from East Mountain Road to Western Avenue. Give us your street when you call.
Does Westfield require a permit to replace a garage door?
The city's Building Department page does not mention garage doors, so we cannot say for certain. Call the department at 413-572-6251 before a replacement. Routine repairs to a spring, cable or roller are different, but ask if you are unsure.
What do I do if the power is out and the garage door will not open?
Pull the red emergency release cord to disconnect the door from the opener, then lift the door by hand. If the door feels very heavy, a spring may be broken, so stop and call us rather than forcing it.
How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?
Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
