Mostly older houses with original doors
Big Spring is the seat of Howard County, a railroad and oil town where I-20 runs along the north side and US 87 crosses it. According to the Census Bureau's American Community Survey as summarized by city-stats.com, the median home here was built in 1964 and about 79 percent of homes are single-family. That is a lot of garage doors, tracks, springs and openers that are decades old.
Neighborhood names that show up on listing sites include Kentwood, College Heights, Edwards Heights, Wasson Place and West Cliff. We could not verify any association rules in them. The Big Spring Downtown Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in August 2024, and we could not verify whether the city reviews door changes there, so ask the city before you swap a door on a downtown building.
Tell us your cross street and whether the door is a single, a double or a pair, and we book the soonest visit. We weigh and balance each door before choosing new springs.

What Big Spring weather does to a garage door
NOAA's 1991-2020 normals, as shown on Wikipedia, give Big Spring a July mean daily high near 96 degrees, a January mean low near 31, and a record low of -5. Summer heat dries rollers and weatherseals, and freezing nights stiffen opener grease and the rubber along the bottom edge.
The National Weather Service in Midland reported hail of 2 to 3 inches around the city when a supercell tracked along US 87 into Big Spring on May 29, 2025. Hail that size can dent steel and thin-skin panels and crack window inserts, and flying debris can bend a track. High wind loads wide doors, so a door that rattles or scrapes is worth a look.
Twice a year, wipe the tracks, lubricate the rollers and hinges and test the safety reverse. After hail, check the panels and track sections before you run the opener.
- Check panels and windows after hail
- Lubricate rollers and hinges twice a year
- Test the safety reverse after a cold snap

Incredible honest work. Emil took care of all the repairs needed in order for my garage door to work again. I know I need a new garage door but I can't afford it right now this company was nice enough to fix it instead of hounding me for more money to get a new door. Emil was so nice that he even provided me a price. I was so happy he said I could call him when I had the money and he would honor me the price. amazing company to reach out to.Jasmine · Google review

Doesn't get any better than this guy! I have recently purchased a condo with a broken garage door opener. It was missing some brackets. I called them, and Emil came out promptly the next morning. On time! He was able to run back to his shop and get the bracket I needed. It took him less than an hour to complete the entire project! My garage door works great now. I said a little thank you to Emil as I opened my garage door late last night and drove in my garage. I would definitely call him again if I needed anything done with my garage door. Highly recommend, plus he's just a super nice guy, which the process so much easier. Thanks Emil!Winston · Google review

Called the office to let them know my issues and asked if we could get someone out to look at my door. Was told between 11-12...drove home from work at 11:05 and Emil was waiting and ready to get to work. Not knowing anything about how to fix a garage door, Emil did a great job explaining why I was having issues. Quoted a reasonable price (well at least what I thought was reasonable) and less than 40 minute later he had fixed the problem. Great customer service from intake of the call to fixing my door! If you need a garage door repair...support local business and give them your business, you won't be disappointed.Guadalupe · Google review

Opener safety, permits and design rules in Big Spring
Opener safety. Federal rules (the Consumer Product Safety Commission's standard for automatic residential garage door operators, 16 CFR part 1211) require openers made for homes to reverse the door when it meets an obstruction and to have a separate entrapment protection device, which on most openers is the pair of photo-eye sensors near the floor. If your opener ignores the sensors or does not reverse, stop using it and call us. See opener installation.
HOAs and style rules. If you live in a planned community or a historic district, check style and color rules before you choose a new door. See new garage doors for styles.
City permits. Big Spring is its own city. Permits and Inspections is at 217 E. 3rd Street, phone 432-264-2504, and the city's site is bigspringtx.gov. The city's FAQ lists windows and doors among cosmetic projects that need no permit, but it does not mention garage door replacement or opener installation, so we could not confirm a rule for either. Call the permits office before the work. The city also says contractors must be registered with it before permits are issued.
Texas rules. We found no Texas statewide license for garage door contractors. The Texas Department of Public Safety says installers of garage door or gate openers who do no other regulated security work need no DPS license, unless the opener is connected to an alarm system or records who comes and goes. Whether wiring an opener's power supply counts as regulated electrical work is something we could not verify.

Big Spring garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Big Spring?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Big Spring (ZIP 79720) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (214) 382-3772, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Big Spring?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Big Spring?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP code do you serve in Big Spring?
Big Spring's street delivery ZIP code is 79720. ZIP 79721 is for PO boxes only. The 79720 area also reaches past the city into the surrounding countryside, so call us if you are not sure we reach your address.
Do you repair garage doors in Coahoma and Forsan?
Yes. Coahoma is about 10 miles east of Big Spring on I-20 and Forsan is south-east of the city. Tell us the town and your cross street when you call and we book the soonest visit.
What does hail do to a garage door in Big Spring?
Hail can dent steel and thin-skin panels, crack window inserts and bend track sections. We check the panels, tracks, springs and opener, explain what we find and quote the price before we start.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can handle a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so we do not recommend fixing them yourself.
How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?
Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
