Why gates in Lompoc stop working
Some of these have a quick check you can try. If they do not solve it, call us.
| What you notice | Likely cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Sliding gate jumps or scrapes on its track | Worn wheels, a dirty or bent track or a loose guide roller | Clean and straighten the track, replace wheels and rollers |
| Gate opens by itself or will not stay closed | A stuck input, a loop or sensor fault, or a loose latch | Trace the input, repair the sensor, realign the latch |
| Keypad or intercom is dead | Water in the unit, a wiring fault or a failed unit | Test the wiring, dry out or replace the keypad or intercom |
| Swing gate will not latch | The gate has dropped or the strike has moved | Realign the gate and the latch |
| Operator is slow or noisy | Dry hinges or bearings, a worn gear or arm, or a weak battery | Lubricate, replace the worn part, test the battery |
| Gate opens one way only | A limit setting, an obstruction or a failed board input | Reset the limits, clear the path, test the board |
Never stand in the path of an automatic gate while you test it.

Mid-1970s houses and plenty of rentals
Lompoc is a Santa Barbara County city in the Santa Ynez River valley. According to the Census Bureau's 2024 five-year American Community Survey estimates, the median home was built in 1976, about 52 percent of its housing units are single-family detached houses and about 8 percent are attached homes. The rest are mostly apartments and small multifamily buildings.
The same survey puts owner-occupancy at about 49 percent, so roughly half of Lompoc households rent. A gate at a rental can mean a landlord, a manager and a tenant who each have a view on the repair. We could not confirm any gated or HOA community inside the city limits, so if you live in an association, check its rules before you change a gate or an operator.
A houses-and-driveways city like this has plenty of swing gates and sliding gates that are a few decades old. We start with the gate itself, hinges, rollers, track and latch, then test the operator, the sensors and the remote.

What Lompoc's weather does to a gate
Wikipedia's climate table for Lompoc, citing NOAA normals, shows average daily highs of only about 71 to 73 degrees from June to August and roughly 15 inches of rain a year, nearly all of it outside summer. Fog and an ocean breeze are common. Damp air and morning fog get into keypads, control boxes and exposed wiring.
Wind is the bigger test. A Santa Maria Times report describes northwest winds of 32 to 46 mph with gusts to 55 mph that toppled a palm tree onto a car in Lompoc, and KSBY reported a 60 mph wind reading in the area in February 2019. A solid gate acts like a sail in that kind of wind, which strains hinges, posts and the operator arm.
Before the windy months, check that hinge bolts are tight, wipe fog and dust off the sensor lenses and test the backup battery so the gate still moves in a power cut.
- Check hinge bolts and latches after strong wind
- Dry out keypads and control boxes that stay damp
- Test the backup battery once a year

My garage door and opener were pretty banged up and not working properly. Emil Garage Doors came out, did a thorough evaluation of door and all it's parts. Even though the previous home owner rigged up the garage door opener with the wrong springs and parts, Emil repaired the door and saved us money by using some of the old parts. That kind of honesty will get 5 stars all day long. Thank you Emil Garage Doors for your great service.Bradford · Google review
I woke up to a loud crash when a tree in my front yard fell over and hit my garage door. Emil Garage Doors was able to give be a really good price on a new garage door. They uninstalled the old, damaged door and realigned the tracks the garage door connects to which had been damaged as well. The new door looks great and most importantly functions well. Thank you for going above and beyond in my time of need!Stuart · Google review
They were able to come within a few hours of my call. Another company could only give me a 4 hour window of arrival time the next day, but these guys was able to give me a 2 hour window the same day. One the guys called before arriving. He was friendly and competent in explaining the problem and our options. I was so grateful he had replacement springs and was able to fix our garage door in less than an hour.David · Google review
Not paying attention I closed the garage door on a pipe laying in the track. Needless to say it did some damage even though the automatic reverse opened the door back up. Emailed what happened on Sunday evening. Appointment with quote provided in just a few minutes and appointment confirmed. Once again they arrived on time. Completed repairs quickly and for less then the quote. Cleaned up like they were never there. I highly recommend them and will continue to use them for my garage door repairs.Carroll · Google review
Technician showed up on time, assessed our issue & presented replacement options. He proceeded to install new equipment during the same visit and everything was finished in less than two hours. We were impressed with the performance of our tech. It’s easy for us to recommend this company.Kathleen · Google review

Permits, HOAs and emergency access in Lompoc
City permits. The City of Lompoc handles permits through its Building and Safety Division at 100 Civic Center Plaza, general line (805) 875-8220, with information on cityoflompoc.com. The city's permits page says a building permit is required before erecting, altering or moving a structure and that minor repairs and maintenance do not need one. We could not confirm whether a gate, a gate operator or its wiring needs a permit, so call the division before a new gate or new electrical work.
Fire hazard. The City of Lompoc has said that the 2025 CAL FIRE update rates parts of the city Moderate, High or Very High for fire hazard, with the area north of town near the Wye named in city materials. Ask the city about your address if you plan new gate or fence work in that area.
Emergency access. Gates can affect how fire and police reach a property. Ask the local fire department about key switch or Knox box requirements before you install or change a locked entry.
HOAs. If your neighborhood has an HOA with an architectural review board, ask before you change the design or color of a gate. We can write a scope of work for the review.
Safety standard. Automatic gate operators are covered by the UL 325 safety standard, which calls for entrapment protection such as photo eyes or safety edges. We test those devices before the gate goes back into service.

Lompoc gate repair: questions we hear
Is there gate repair near me in Lompoc?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs swing and sliding driveway gates in Lompoc (ZIP 93436) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (213) 340-4232, tell us your street or neighborhood, the gate type and what it does, and we book the soonest visit. See gate repair near me.
Is there electric gate repair near me in Lompoc?
Yes. Electric gate repair near me in Lompoc means a technician who repairs the operator, control board, sensors, remotes and backup battery as well as the gate itself. Call (213) 340-4232 and we book the soonest visit. See electric gate repair.
What is the difference between gate repair and electric gate repair in Lompoc?
Gate repair means the gate itself: hinges, posts, latches, wheels, tracks and frames. Electric gate repair means the parts that move it: the operator, control board, sensors, remotes, keypads and battery. Most service calls need both checked, so we start with the gate and then test the electronics. See gate repair.
Why does my electric gate hum but not open?
A humming operator with a gate that will not move usually means the gate is jammed or a part in the operator has failed, such as a capacitor or gear. Stop using it and call us before the motor burns out.
How much does gate repair cost in Lompoc?
The price depends on what failed, the size and weight of the gate and the parts. We quote after we see the gate or photos, and before work starts.
My gate does not work during a power outage. What can I do?
Most operators have a manual release, and many can use a backup battery. Use the release as the manufacturer directs and call us. We test the battery and the control board, because a flat battery or a board that lost its settings after an outage is common.
Should electric gates be serviced?
Yes. A yearly check of the battery, sensors, hinges or track, and operator keeps a gate from failing at a bad time.
Can you repair a gate operator from any brand?
We repair most residential operators. Tell us the brand and model, or send a photo of the unit. If parts are no longer made we explain your options.
Which ZIP code do you serve in Lompoc?
Lompoc homes use ZIP code 93436. ZIP code 93437 belongs to Vandenberg, 93436 also carries the Vandenberg Village alias, and 93438 is for PO boxes. Call us with your address if you are not sure we reach you.
Does wind damage electric gates in Lompoc?
Strong northwest wind has been reported in Lompoc, and a solid or slatted gate catches it like a sail. Wind can bend an operator arm, loosen hinge bolts or push a swing gate off its stop. We straighten and re-tighten what moved, then test the operator and its safety sensors.
Can a handyman fix a gate?
A handyman can handle a loose latch or a dead remote battery. A failed operator, a control board or a gate that has dropped off its hinges needs a technician who can test the controls and the safety devices.
Do you repair garage doors in Lompoc too?
Yes. See garage door repair in Lompoc for springs, cables, openers and new doors, and garage door repair near me. When you ask for both we can look at the gate and the garage door at the same address.
