What Walnut Creek weather does to a garage door

Wikipedia's climate table for Walnut Creek uses the Western Regional Climate Center station Walnut Creek 2 ESE. It puts the average daily high at 82.5 degrees in June, 88.2 in July and 87.2 in August, with January near 55 and an annual average high of 72.4. The record high is 115 degrees in July and the record low is 17. We do not quote a rainfall total, because the table and the article text disagree.

Wikipedia says the city sits below the western slopes of Mount Diablo. Walnut Creek is not on CC Pulse's list of 12 Contra Costa cities with Very High fire hazard areas, but homes near the foothills can still face wildfire exposure, so check the State Fire Marshal map for your address. On July 3, 2024, extreme heat knocked out power to close to 2,000 Contra Costa homes, according to NBC Bay Area, and on October 18, 2024, PG&E shut off power in 12 counties including Contra Costa during a Diablo wind event. We found no Walnut Creek-specific outage record.

Before summer, wipe the tracks, oil the rollers and hinges, and press the test button on the battery backup. Know where the manual release is, in case the power goes out.

Houses, townhomes and condos around a busy downtown

According to the Census Bureau's 2024 one-year estimates, the median home in Walnut Creek was built in 1974. About 66 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied, but only about 36 percent of all homes are detached houses. Detached and attached homes together make up about 54 percent, and the rest is multifamily buildings and condos. So a garage here may serve a house, a townhome or a shared parking structure, and we ask which before a visit.

Wikipedia says Walnut Creek was incorporated on October 21, 1914 and first settled in 1849, with Southern Pacific rail service arriving in 1891. The Broadway Shopping Center opened in 1951 as the county's first major retail center and is now Broadway Plaza, and the intersection of Mount Diablo Boulevard and North Main Street marks the historic site of The Corners. Wikipedia also calls Rossmoor a gated community in Walnut Creek, with a 55-and-older rule, 6,676 units and a Golden Rain Foundation. We could not verify whether Rossmoor lies inside the city limits, and garage door rules there come from its association, so ask it first.

For a condo or townhome, the association usually decides who may replace a door and which style is allowed. Tell us the cross street and whether the door is yours alone, and we book the soonest visit.

Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina Β· Google review

"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela Β· Google review

Emil is delightful, knowledgeable, professional, and capable. He promised to make the process easy and he did. From our first contact Thursday mid-day through completion of the project Saturday at Noon, everything was 100% perfect, and we are extremely happy. We are amazed when we look outside and see our beautiful new door, so soon after searching on google. Emil and his company deserve 100 stars but we are limited to only 5Dawn Β· Google review

It went very well, with the job being completed in three days. We waited few months for the supply chain to kick in ( Covid related delays ) and finally deliver the products. It was so worth the wait. Great installers, Emil and his team are professional and friendly, too, and patient in answering questions.Rachel Β· Google review

Rules to know

Battery backup, permits and design rules in Walnut Creek

Battery backup. California requires a battery backup on residential garage door openers sold or installed in the state (Health and Safety Code section 19892). A new door cannot be connected to an older opener that lacks one. See opener installation.

Design rules. Planned communities and historic overlays can limit door style and color. Ask before you choose a new door: new garage doors.

City permits. Walnut Creek is its own city, so its rules come from the City of Walnut Creek. The Building Division is at 1666 N. Main Street, 2nd Floor, and an aggregator page lists (925) 943-5834, BuildingTech@walnutcreekca.gov, public hours Monday to Thursday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and an inspection line at (925) 943-5833. The city site did not open for us, so confirm the numbers and hours. A search summary of a city submittal checklist from April 2020 says a building permit is needed for new, relocated or replacement windows or doors in residential buildings. The city's list of work that does not need a permit, as the aggregator summarizes it, does not mention garage doors or openers. We could not confirm whether a garage door or opener replacement needs a permit, so ask the Building Division before the work, at walnutcreekca.gov.

Building code and zones. A search summary of the city's page says permit applications from January 1, 2026 must follow the 2025 Building Code. We could not verify any hillside, historic or fire-zone rule that applies inside the city, so if your home is near the foothills or in an older neighborhood, ask the city.

FAQ

Walnut Creek garage door repair: questions we hear

Is there garage door repair near me in Walnut Creek?

Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Walnut Creek (ZIP 94595, 94596, 94597 and 94598) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (213) 340-4232, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.

What is the average price to repair a garage door in Walnut Creek?

Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.

What is the most common garage door repair in Walnut Creek?

Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.

How much is a service call for a garage door?

Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?

A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.

Which ZIP codes do you serve in Walnut Creek?

Walnut Creek homes use ZIP codes 94595, 94596, 94597 and 94598, according to zip-codes.com. ZIP areas can reach past the city limits, so call us with your street and we confirm we reach it. We also serve nearby Lafayette, Pleasant Hill, Concord and Alamo.

Does a garage door replacement in Walnut Creek need a permit?

We could not confirm a garage-door-specific rule. A city checklist, seen only in a search summary, says replacement windows or doors in residential buildings need a building permit, but it does not name garage doors. Call the Walnut Creek Building Division at (925) 943-5834, and confirm that number with the city first.

Do I need my HOA's approval to change a garage door in Walnut Creek?

We could not verify any association's rules. Only about 36 percent of Walnut Creek homes are detached houses, and many townhomes and condos belong to an association that may set door style and color. Ask yours for its guidelines before you order.

Can a handyman fix a garage door?

A handyman can often handle a simple job such as a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so call us for those.

Does California require a battery backup on a garage door opener?

Yes. California Health and Safety Code section 19892 says residential openers sold or installed in the state need a battery backup, and a replacement garage door cannot be connected to an older residential opener that lacks one.

Do you also repair gates in Walnut Creek?

Yes. See gate repair and electric gate repair.
